Beyond the Crest is an exciting piece that captures the essence of Sean O'Loughlin's popular style. The piece opens with a slow, soaring melody that develops throughout the composition. Pulsating eighth notes build the tension and intense harmonies drive the piece to a satisfying and dynamic ending.Beyond the Crest was commissioned by the Lakeshore Bands of Stevensville, Michigan, and dedicated to Philip and Cindy Huff, Directors of Bands, in honor of their retirement. The piece captures the excitement and achievement that defined Philip and Cindy Huff's illustrious careers. The piece opens with a slow, soaring melody that will become the basis of the entire composition. It builds to an intense chord at m. 13 that sets off into the fast section at m. 14. This section begins with some eighth-note pulses. The woodwinds have more eighth notes than the rest of the ensemble to create an echo effect. Bring out the dynamics to highlight this. The main melody comes in at m. 33, which is a faster version of the opening melody. It is complimented by some eighth-note punches and lush chords. The woodwinds take over at m. 43 with a much broader accompaniment in the lower voices. The lower voices get their chance at the melody at m. 54. The echo effect returns at m. 68 to start the cycle over again but this time with some new wrinkles. Measure 77 transports to a new tonal center and then brings it back to a broad presentation at m. 85. The eighth notes return to bring the piece to an exciting end.

O Great Beyond was commissioned by JAM (the John Armitage Memorial) and first performed by the BBC Singers and Nicholas Cleobury on July 8th, 2016, as part of the JAM on the Marsh festival. The text is taken from The Gardener, a collection of verse by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941). Published one year after Tagore’s Nobel Prize-winning collection of spiritual poems, Gitanjali (1912), The Gardener contains poems that were written much earlier in his career. Tagore retrospectively described this collection as the “lyrics of love and life.†The musical narrative of O Great Beyond is meant to mirror the stages of love portrayed in The Gardener, culminating in the desire for a “Beautiful End†in the final movement. —Thomas LaVoy  .

“Ingenting utanför / Nothing Beyond†is another collaboration between MÃ¥rten Jansson and the Swedish poet Einar Askestad. This a cappella choral work deals with sorrow and loss. After a forceful, harmonically ambiguous section and a clear break in the music, the piece ends with a comforting decrescendo of reconciliation. It was commissioned by the Uppsala female choir “La Cappella†and is dedicated to its choral director Tony Margeta.“My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as ‘so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings’ but also as ‘the happiest classical music that we have ever heard‘.My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.“MÃ¥rten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice.
