This short, “cool†suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete brass band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane, which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.Deze korte suite is uitvoerbaar in elke denkbare bezetting (eventueel inclusief piano). De leerlingen van het orkest vonden de voormalige school ‘cool’, omdat ze er fijn konden musiceren. Het eerste deel straalt deze vreugde uit met een krachtige beat in driekwartsmaat. Der dritte Satz bildet ein fröhliches, in Hochstimmung endendes Finale in einem ansprechenden Funk-Beat. Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to “Nulli Secundusâ€, the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp’s own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair! De titel Second to None past heel goed bij dit werk, maar verwijst eigenlijk naar ‘Nulli Secundus’, het motto van British Army Corps of Music, het orkest dat Philip Sparke de opdracht voor dit werk gaf. Second to None opent met een fanfare. Daarna volgen twee korte citaten uit twee van de eigen marsen van het orkest en een feestelijke Vivace. Een meer legato deel creëert een mooi contrast voordat het werk wordt afgesloten met de openingsfanfare. Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds thetrio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close. Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well asa festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and isdeveloped, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weavestraight through the brighter instruments.Dit levendige werk vol dynamische uitersten is opgedragen aan de North American Brass Band Association. Qua vorm is het geënt op de ouverturestijl, hoewel de thema’s op zichzelf staan en het een programmatische compositie betreft. Het is heelgeschikt voor de opening van een festival, want het creëert een enthousiaste, verwachtingsvolle stemming. Na de ritmische fanfares van de opening wordt het eerste thema gepresenteerd in de cornetten, gevolgd door een terugkeer naar hetzelfderitmische materiaal. Suite aux fanfares rythmiques du début, le premier thème est présenté par les cornets piston, suivi par un retour au même matériel rythmique. Un deuxième thème apparaît dans le registre des cors et estdéveloppé, se changeant en une version plus sombre et sinistre du même motif. Finalement on arrive une section de Maestoso, qui contient de nombreuses double-cordes soutenues chez les cornets et trombones, tandis que le reste de l’ensemblerépond par des lignes descendantes qui se tissent travers les instruments plus aigus.

This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept.The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word, which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.
