Viktor Ullmann composed his choral arrangements of Hebrew, Yiddish and Chassidic songs in the ghetto of Theresienstadt in 1943/1944. In the function of 'Head of the Studio for New Music', Ullmann made a significant contribution to the so-called 'leisure activities' in the ghetto. The works were evidently intended for the repertoire of the various choirs at Theresienstadt, including children's choirs such as the Karel Vrbas Youth Choir in which Ullmann's son Max also sang. There is no evidence to confirm that Ullmann's choral works were actually performed in Theresienstadt, for example in one of the frequent concerts given by Rafael Schachter's choir of up to a hundred voices (cf. Milan Kuna, Musik an der Grenze des Lebens, 21998. p.313). The German translations below first appeared in the song book Makkabi-Liederbuch published in Berlin in 1930 (2nd edition 1935) which was available to Viktor Ullmann as a source for the melodies and text orthography for his choral arrangements in Theresienstadt.

The opening chorus uses the first verse of the old plainsong hymn Veni redemptor gentium, which in the paraphrase by Martin Luther has become the most important Advent hymn of the Protestant Church. Bach introduces the traditional plainsong melody in the form of a French overture, here symbolizing the entry of the King of Heaven, thus creating an unusual and splendid opening piece for the beginning of the church year. Score available separately - see item CA.3106100.

Melodious evening songs lend themselves to a quiet ending or an imaginatively accented concert. This choral collection is a selection with about 40 English, German and international lullabies and evening songs of stylistic diversity, with easily singable settings for a mixed choir, some of which include piano accompaniments. The repertoire ranges from Baroque and Romantic works to contemporary works, with settings newly-composed for the collection and well-known lullabies and evening songs. The conductor's volume includes a CD with recordings of selected pieces. The songs chosen are largely from the German and English repertoire, but also include pieces in Spanish, French, and Russian. With well-known compositions by composers such as J. S. Bach, Brahms, Elgar, Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Rheinberger, Scholefield, Stanford, and Sullivan. Ten of the songs have been newly-arranged specially for this collection by leading composers (Ludwig Bohme, Daniel Carter, Ian McDougal, Gunther Martin Gottsche, Reijo Kekkonen, Clifford W. King, Andrej Makor, Giacomo Mezzalira, Christoph Muller, and Peter Schindler). Easy to medium difficulty. Mainly for (S)SATB choir a cappella, a few settings with piano accompaniment. A CD with selected songs is included with the conductor's volume. The choral collection is published as Conductor's volume with CD and editionchor (budget edition for choral singers).

With Carl Friedrich Zelter's motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Hermann Max, editor of the Choral Treasury series, has uncovered a real treasure. The three-verse text of the motet for mixed choir (SATB) and basso continuo was written by Friedrich Gottlob Klopstock who kept close to the Advent song of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. During Zelter's lifetime, the motet enjoyed great popularity. And quite rightly so: For the music teacher and friend of Goethe turned out to be a composer with an extraordinary sense of tone. An introductory choral movement is followed by a captivating bass aria which can be optionally sung by all basses of the choir. The piece culminates in an elaborate virtuoso fugue with an interwoven cantus firmus in the bass. A demanding, yet highly rewarding rarity in church music!

Peacefully flowing from a gentle pastorale by J.S. Bach, this graceful melody rises like a folk song. Presented as a testimony of commitment, the text nourishes the heart to trust and follow the path of righteousness. The chorus is full and expressive, sharing the desire to walk worthy until our faith becomes sight. Music of the heart!
