Work for Flute and Guitar commissioned by Clive Conway and Gerald Garcia.Anthony Payne: 'As a passionate Elgarian for most of my musical life I was fascinated by the prospect of writing something which reflected or somehowincorporated his Memorial Chimes written for the Loughborough Carillon a piece moreover which I did not know although I pride myself on an intimate acquaintance with the greater part of his output. My own style is a far cryfrom that of the English late-romantics which I so love but I have recently discovered how to relate to their music in more than just spiritual and emotional particulars and in Spring's Shining Wake I produced a gloss of Delius'In a Summer Garden finding equivalents in my vocabulary for each of that work's procedures somethings approaching the original closely and sometimes shadowing it from afar.p>When I saw the Elgar I immediately realised that thiskind of approach was out of the question. For one thing it is quite a short piece and frankly it is not one of the master's great inspirations. It does however possess one characteristically haunting phrase and I saw how Icould draw it within my own harmonic and textural orbit not the sort of idea to base a work on but a happy little discovery such as one often makes during the course of composing a work.I accordingly set out to write a shorttone poem which somehow draws together the sonorous 'objets trouvés' which float into the mind during intense contemplation of a still landscape memories of the past (the Elgar) intimations of magic in the wind sudden intenseperceptions of the cosmic forces of which we form such an insignificant part ominous vibrations borne on the air from some other existence.

Brief tuneful melodies arranged for intermediate flutists and guitarists from early American (1817) popular music. Written in standard notation these delightful arrangements feature collections of popular melodies from that eraas well as airs and dances. In keeping with performance practice of the traditional music played during this time these arrangements are organized into sets of pieces as they may have been performed during this era. The setsinclude jigs slow airs and marches as well as melodies that were popular from the continent. These arrangements are appropriate both for background music as well as public concert performance. The arrangements are derived froma book of flute melodies entitled ?Riley?s Flute Melodies.? Published in 1816 and 1817 this book was possibly used as jazz musicians use lead sheets to develop spontaneous arrangements of pieces depending upon the occasion andthe musicians at hand. The guitar arrangements were modeled upon existing guitar practice during that time and use idiomatic guitar devices such as pizzicato and harmonics to provide an imaginative underpinning for the melodies.Many of the arrangements give equal treatment to both the guitar as a harmonic and melodic instrument.

John W. Duarte (1919-2004) was a British guitarist composer and music journalist. Having received a degree in Chemistry his fascination with the endless possibilities of the Guitar caused him to abandon science infavour of music. Despite having never formally studied music he is regarded as one of the foremost composers for Guitar of the 20th century. His English Suite No. 4 was composed for Flute (orRecorder) and Guitar and published in 1979 as his opus 82. Scored in three movements it makes use of traditional English folksongs: All in a Garden Green/The Rambling Sailor - Scarborough Fair - The Two Magicians.
