With string parts as close to the original as possible, this full orchestra arrangement of two movements from Grieg's Holberg Suite is a gem! It may be performed by string or full orchestra, and, for ultimate flexibility, each movement can be performed alone. Featuring the 'Sarabande' and 'Gavotte,' careful attention has been paid to maintain the original intentions of the composer in this piece. The Concerto for Violin was written in early 2012 for Philip Ficsor. The four movements conceived separately are intended to have the feeling of a suite rather than a verbose heavy interpretation of the concerto form. The first movement A Little Parlour Music carries the subtitle after Poulenc in a reflection of the lightness and charm of that composer's work. The second movment Remembrance of Things Past is the most expressive of the movements. The third movement Santa Barbara Rag is full of syncopated rhythm and humor with even a slight reference to another well-known rag. And the fourth movement John Adams Light looks back at the early minimalism of Adams with itsrepitition and constant motion. The concerto is available with piano reduction and for rental with the full orchestra accompaniment.

Score-John Adams's creative output spans a wide range of media: works for orchestra opera video film and dance as well as electronic and instrumental music. Such pieces as Harmonium Harmonielehre Shaker Loops and The ChairmanDances are among the best known and most frequently performed of contemporary American music. In these works he has taken minimalism into a new and fresh terrain characterized by luminous sonorities and a powerful and dramaticapproach to form.

Philip Glass has produced ten symphonies so far the ones immediately preceding this one inspired by sources as diverse as Allen Ginsberg poetry Aboriginal writings and Native American song. Symphony No 8 however has noreferences to non-musical materials and takes as its subject according to Glass ‘the language of music itself’.The three-movement work does not conform to classical symphonic form with an extended twenty-minute first movement a slow passacaglia for the second movement and a short dense theme joined by a counter theme then ending with an extended cadence to complete the work in the third movement. The music unfolds in a space in which the memory of the earlier music has the same reality as the music of today. But the music of the memory is naturally distant and vague whereas the music of today is present and gesticulated.In the opening section the past and the present are clearly separated but during the piece this balance is lifted as 'the music of the past' (trumpet signals Sicilian melodicity romantic Pathos strawinskian neo-classicism) in a dynamic andoften dramatic surrealistic play with minimalism and modernism of today is unravelled.
