The piano-accompanied Lied is undoubtedly the main genre of Pauline Viardot-Garcia's oeuvre. With this volume, we present settings of German texts by such poets as Ludwig Uhland, Eduard Morike, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Heinrich Heine, Emanuel Geibel, Ludwig Rellstab and Richard Pohl. Except for the Uhland settings, these German Lieder were written between 1862 and 1871 during Viardot's Baden-Baden period, when she shifted the focus of her activities from singing to composing and teaching. Here she worked, among other things, on the poetry of Eduard Morike, which she called the greatest and most genuine in all German poetry after Goethe.One of her first published songs was the setting of the Uhland poem Des Knaben Berglied. Accompanying herself on the piano, she performed it in 1838 on her first concert tour of Germany. A performance of the song at the Leipzig Gewandhaus prompted Robert Schumann to remark: She showed three talents here [composition, singing and piano playing], each of which would grace its artist. The song cycle Cancons dels mesos [Songs of the months] was written in 1919 to a set of poems by Apel·les Mestres (1854-1936). There is one song for each month and the poems seem to look at the months and seasons as seen from the Catalan Mediterranean where the wine harvest and the fields near the sea are so typical. Mestres was a writer, drawer and musician; as a writer he cultivated poetry, theatre and prose, which he often mixed in his work. Most of his lyric and dramatic work is set music by composers like Enric Granados, Amadeu Vives, Enric Morera. His use of the Catalan language was important in the renaissance of the Catalan culture so in style at the time.The songs of this cycle, are influenced by the Mediterranean sea, the coast of Cataluna and the general vocal tendencies in Europe around the turn of the century, mostly from the German school of Wagner and Strauss. In general there is little folk influence in the songs, but in two occasions there is a reference to the Catalan songs, Desembre congelat, and a direct use in one of the songs of the rhythm of the Sardana a typical Catalan dance.

The Czech composer Zdenek Fibich (1850–1900) had a keen interest in classical German literature. It therefore comes as no surprise that he had already set songs to texts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe while still a student at the Leipzig Conservatory.Between 1865 and 1871 he composed 16 songs on texts by this famous German author for voice and piano. Ten of them have survived: the song “An den Mondâ€, dating from 1869, and nine further songs from Goethe’s novel “Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre†were composed immediately after Fibich’s return to Prague in 1871. All ten now appear here in a single-volume Urtext edition edited by Barbora Kubecková.

“Three songs by Kurt Weill is a set of three French songs for Voice and Piano. The lyrics have been written by Maurice Magre and Roger Fernay and the general level of difficulty is medium. The first piece, Complainte de la Seine (Complains of the Seine), is three page long and its lyrics are about what lies at the bottom of the river. The second song, Je ne t?aime pas (I don?t love you), is a man telling someone that he doesn?t love her, that everything is fine and that he is fine if she is happy. The third piece, Youkali is a highly rhythmic tango-habanera in four pages, which depicts the island of Youkali.
