Allain Gaussin, a pupil of Olivier Messiaen at the CNSM in Paris, and a veritable alchemist of sound, created a sensual and sparkling work that aims to induce in listeners the sort of 'internal awakening? that the Japanese refer to as Satori - the title given to a piece for solo clarinet he wrote in 1998. Composed a decade later, Tokyo-City for solo Piano draws on the same inspiration, fuelled by several stays in Japan. Gaussin sets out to reproduce the various sensations he experienced during his walks around the Japanese megalopolis: a fear of being swallowed up by its vastness gives way to a bedazzlement in the face of a buzzing universe awash with harmonies and colours. The work follows a dual symmetrical structure (in terms of register and tempo): after an enigmatic start entrusted to the low notes of the piano, a musical figure gradually emerges from 'floating polyphonies?, producing a veritable toccata which is slowly deformed, like an ana­morphosis. Then, only a glimmering of crystal-clear harmonies remains, and the work ends sparsely on the highest notes of the piano. / Piano

Péter Wolf (a doctoral graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest) has composed a number of large-scale compositions in recent years which have had success at the hands of distinguished performers: these include two piano concertos as well as concertos for oboe, clarinet, and violin. By entitling his newest set of pieces for piano Wolf-temperiertes Klavier, the composer was able to simultaneously indulge in wordplay based upon his surname and give a tip of the hat to German baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach. The work's likeness to Bach is not limited to its title - the manner in which a piece has been written in both major and minor keys for each tone of the chromatic scale is blatantly inspired by Bach. In the preface to this publication, Wolf offers the following insights: ''I think I managed to find expressive titles. The first piece, Epiclesis (a prayer for inspiration, patience, and support), was heard from above: I was able to work continuously and without inhibitions. The works could be born in every key, until the last one, the Epilogue, was completed. When I finally finished inscribing the pitches of Bach's name, I admit, a little shiver went through me.'' Of the character pieces, all were completely new with the exceptions of one being previously written and another whose theme Wolf borrowed from one of his own stage works. Composed at the end of 1785, Mozart ’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major forms a group of three with the two famous concerti in A major K. 488 and in C minor K. 491, which he completed in March of the following year. What they all have in common is Mozart ’s inclusion of Clarinets in the Orchestra for the first time. In this he succeeded to particularly impressive effect with the lyrical passages in the slow sections of the E-flat-major concerto, which was well received by the audience at the first performance. Indeed, his father, Leopold, reports in a letter that Mozart “had to repeat” the Andante immediately. G.
