Performance Score and Parts-This scholarly-critical edition is based on all the known sources whether printed or handwritten that have come down to us for these frequently played pieces. By closely scrutinizing the source material the editor has arrived at interesting findings that considerably differ from earlier editions of these works. Rather than taking as her principal source Le Clerc’s 1740 print of Sonatas I to VI – an edition probably made without the composer’s consent – the editor has examined the Naples and Wiesentheid manuscripts prepared under Vivaldi’s direct supervision. The editor has also managed to identify a previously unknown source forSonata RV 44. All departures from the sources in the printed text and all editorial additions are listed in the critical report. Cellists are thus given ready access to every alternative reading including deleted bars and the many inevitable variants in articulation. A detailed preface provides essential information on sources and their assessment with a section on performance practice offering valuable suggestions on interpretation. All of Antonio Vivaldi's works for violoncello and continuo in a single edition Scholarly-critical edition for performance purposes Detailed preface on sources and performance practice (German/English) With new findings that considerably differ from earlier editions 'This edition is invaluable for all performers of the Sonatas .' (Ensemble January 2004) 'This is certainly the definitive edition of these works.'(Strings August/September 2003)

It was a chance visit to a second hand bookshop in Nottingham that set me on the trail of Rossini's now well-known Duetto for cello and double bass. But the story begins earlier than that. In the 1960s I was studying the double bass at the Royal College of Music with Adrian Beers who was at that time principal of the English Chamber Orchestra on the front desk of the Philharmonia Orchestra and a member of the Melos Ensemble of London (then one of the leading ensembles of the world). I was working on the 'Dragonetti Concerto' as most young players do and I wanted to find out a bit about it. My teacher said he thought the autograph manuscript might be in the British Library which was all the encouragement I needed to secure a pass to the Reading Room so I could go and see for myself. There sure enough I found a large collection of Dragonetti's autograph manuscripts together with other bound volumes relating to his life. The papers had been lovingly collated and annotated by Vincent Novello one of Dragonetti's closest friends then deposited in the library before his departure to Italy in 1848 two years after Dragonetti's death. One of the volumes included a lot of letters about various engagements and music festivals copies of orders for strings Dragonetti wanted from Italy details about paintings he wanted to buy and numerous invitations to private functions. The manuscript of the 'Dragonetti Concerto' of course wasn't among the papers we now know it to have been written by Edouard Nanny a century or so later. One name that came up regularly in the documents was that of Sir George Smart. Smart had been a violinist in Salomon's orchestra and had played for Haydn at his London concerts in the 1790s. As a child he had learnt much about music from his father who had in turn been present at many of Handel's rehearsals when he was preparing some of his major works for the first time. Smart was also a fine keyboard player becoming organist of the Chapel Royal in 1822. As a conductor

arranged for Pianoforte and String Quintet-Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra No.4 Op.58: arranged for Pianoforte and String Quintet.Piano Violin (2) Viola (2) Violoncello. This anonymous sextet arrangement of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto was highly popular in Vienna during the composer’s lifetime. We know this from at least two sets of handwritten parts which were then in circulation. No Piano part has been handed down; indeed the original sets of parts probably omitted the Piano. The soloist presumably studied his part from the first edition of the solo part published with the original performance material in 1808. (The full score did not appear until 1861).The sextetversion deftly integrates the original wind parts into the string texture. The arrangement stands in the tradition of Piano reductions with chamber music accompaniment of the sort which were also made for Mozart’s Piano concertos K.413 to 415 and later for the Chopin concertos. This Urtext edition edited by the renowned Beethoven scholar Jonathan Del Mar presents this arrangement for the first time in print. The musical text is supplemented by an informative Introduction and a Critical Commentary.First ever publication of this arrangement.Includes a separate solo part as was customary in Beethoven’s day.Provides new possibilities for soloists to perform this work.

Fantasia transcribed for violoncello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus-Born in Erfurt the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827 1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are The Infant Paganini and The Boy Paganini. Both appear here in their original version for Violin and Piano and for the first time in a transcription for Cello and Piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus. The Mollenhauer fantasia The Infant Paganini is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché legato spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics andpizzicato. It (BA 10693) can be mastered by young Cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Cello and can manage first to fourth position. The Boy Paganini is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre harmonics and pizzicato. Other challenges include chords on all four strings and simple passages in octaves. On the Cello (BA 10694) the student must be able to play in first to fourth position. Both violinists and cellists should have completed volume 4 of Early Start on the Violin and Early Start on the Cello respectively in order to master this work.- Popular recital pieces for young violinists and cellists.- Both works form an ideal continuation of the Sassmannshaus Early Start methods.- Pieces originally scored for Violin now also available for the first time for Cello.Violin editions:The Infant Paganini BA10691The Boy Paganini BA10692

Cello-Bass-Many selections in this volume are unique and until now have been inaccessible to the string ensemble repertoire. These pieces are intended for multiple strings for performance in the classroom as well as performance in concerts.Several players may be used on each part. Whenever possible every effort was made to keep the viola and violoncello/double bass parts melodic rather than simply filling in the various harmonic chord progressions. The piecesmaybe performed as a solo for each instrument (Violin 1 Violin 2 Viola or Cello) with piano accompaniment or as duets or trios as well as full orchestra. If performed with full orchestra the piano accompaniment is notnecessary. The string ensemble series meets all standards for ASTA with NSOA (American String Teachers Association/National School Orchestra Association) and Suzuki Association of the Americas Inc. Haydn’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in C major (Hob. VIIb:1) w...(+)
Haydn’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in C major (Hob. VIIb:1) was probably composed between 1762 and 1765 when he was already director of music to Prince Esterh zy. It may have been writtenfor the cellist in the court Orchestra Joseph Weigl (1740-1820) for whom Haydn most likely also wrote the solo Cello parts in his early symphonies. Weigl was a member of the Esterh zy ensemble from 1761 to 1769 andthereafter served as a principle cellist in various Viennese ensembles. The concerto was rediscovered by Oldrich Pulkert who in 1961 found an eighteenth-century manuscript copy (Prag National Museum Fonds Radenin) andpublished the concerto in 1962. Previously the existence of this piece was known only through Haydn’s entry in his private list of works (the so-called ‘Entwurf’ [‘draft’] catalogue). The Orchestral setting ismodest: besides the Strings (with a non-obligato Bassoon doubling the Bass part) there are two Oboes and two Horns which are reserved almost exclusively for the tutti passages. This Piano reduction is based on the text givenin the complete edition of Haydn’s works as edited by the Joseph Haydn Institute Cologne (Joseph Haydn Werke Series III Vol.2 with Preface and Critical Report published by G. Henle Verlag Munich 1981). The Cello partin the Piano reduction is identical to that of the complete edition and thus follows the Prague source as closely as possible even in the expression marks and in certain peculiarities of notation.

Par KOSKELIN OLLI. X'Three (2003/2021) by Olli Koskelin is the third piece of a solo cello suite consisting of seven compositions. Each of the seven pieces can be performed individually or detached with other X'-compositions. Different works are yet to be performed chronologically. The X'-works are composed by using the same material viewed from many different angles. Their structure can be seen as a film starting several times from the beginning and from the same settings always looked from a new perspective. In some compositions of the X'-suite seemingly random fragments are joined together organically in other works of the suite. The story, tale, or plot of the music and the gestures and figures of it trans-form in a new context but remain identifiable. Olli Koskelin's (born 16 April 1955) compositional output reflects a wide range of interests. The vast area covered by his style encompasses the neo-impressionism of the piano work Courbures (1989) to the post-expressionist echoes of his Music for String Quartet (1981) as well as the breakneck virtuosity of his clarinet piece Exalte (1985/1991) and the rich romantic textures of his orchestral piece ... like a planet silently breathing... (1993). He often uses the overtone series like the French spectral composers and avoids dramatic culmination. Soft harmonics, tranquil arching melodies, a leisurely rhythmical pulse and a coherence of mood are in evidence in his later works as in Uurre (1997) for chamber ensemble, Miniatures (1997) for string quartet and Circles within for 19 solo strings. / Date parution : 2023-01-24/ Recueil / Violoncelle

Work for Oboe Violin Viola and Cello. Parts available: CH56341.This quartet was commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Arts and written in the autumn of 1967. It is dedicated to Lady Norton and is the second of LennoxBerkeley’s three works written with the oboist the late Janet Craxton in mind the other two being his Sonatina OP 61 and Sinfonia Concertante OP 84.The work begins with a fairly extended introduction leading without a breakinto an Allegro. The whole composition is based on the internal of a third (sometime major sometimes minor) which is heard in the opening phrase of the introduction and again in the main theme of the Allegro though here in atotally different context. The allegro is in more or less traditional sonata form. The middle movement is a kind of Scherzo growing out of a rhythmical figure for the strings and a rapid arpeggio (major and minor chords) forthe oboe. This is a Presto; a more relaxed middle section corresponding to the Trio in a classical work is followed by a much shortened version of the Scherzo. The last movement is brief but very slow all four instrumentstaking up in turn a gently rocking figure that moves to and fro between two notes always a major or minor third apart. The music becomes more animated but returns to the opening figure and dies away each instrument droppingout one after the other leaving the cello alone in the last bar.

These late works for solo strings dating from 1914 and 1915 the last of which was only published posthumously were only known from the first printed editions until now and a scholarly-critical edition based on all the sources has long been desirable. In compensation I have tried my hand at several instrumental things for I have composed two quartets for Violins Viola and Violincello [A minor D 804; D minor D 810] and an octet [F major D 803] and will write yet another quartet [not carried out]. Indeed in this way I hope to prepare the way to the full-scale symphony. The latest news in Vienna is that Beethoven will give a concert [on 7 May 1824] ...I too am inclined to give a similar concert next Year God willing.?ThusSchubert writing on 31 March 1824 to his friend Leopold Kupelwieser in Rome in a lengthy letter whose first section is decidedly low-spirited.
