Three Nocturnal Movements - For Violin Solo Violoncello Solo And Orchestra by Per Nørgård (2015). Based on Remembering Child for Viola and Orchestra(1986). Premiered by Peter Herresthal (violin) and Jakob Kullberg (cello) with Bergen Philharmonic June 6th 2015 in Bergen Norway. The original version was premiered by Pinchas Zukerman and the St. Paul' s Chamber Orchestra conducted by Arturo di Mecke on September 12th 1986.Programme Note:The news of the tragic death of Samantha Smith reached me in the early stages of preparation for the commissioned work for viola and chamberorchestra. Already an admirerer of this childworker for peace and nuclear disarmament I completed my work strongly inspired by this unique and uniquely symbolic fate of our time. Music from humble sources - including my composition Beach Poppy a choral work from 1960 - are woven into the texture of the composition. I was guided by the original meaning of the word 'remembering' (making whole healing) in opposition to 'dismembering' (tearing apart): The healing power of the child.(Per Nørgård)

Commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra this concertino was originally conceived as a part of a complete educational concertprogram. Four concertini each featuring a different instrumental family within the chamber orchestra are played in succession to demonstrate the characteristic sounds of those instruments. The music is thematically related but not identical to the Concertino for Chamber Orchestra (parts available on rental from the publisher) which serves as the program's closer demonstrating all of theorchestral sections playing together. This program is suggested by the composer for orchestra concerts however each instrumental concertino can beperformed individually and stands quite effectively on its own as a short chamber recital piece.

Borrowing Mussorgsky's 'Promenade' from Pictures at an Exhibition the piece has twowalkers (violas) who take the listener with them onto the Via Della Fortuna then lead them from house to house. Several amber objects were found within the houses linking Pompeii with Lithuania. The lastmovement returns to the House of the Ancient Hunt then heads northwards along the Gintaro Kelias. The jubilant closing music refers to an earlier work (Geda's Weavings) based on Lithuanian folksongs.

Thomas Ades' Chamber Symphony Op.2 was first performed on the 24th February 1991 in Cambridge at the West Road Concert Hall. It was performed by the Contemporary Music Festival Ensemble for the Cambridge Festival of Contemporary Music conducted by the composer himself. Chamber Symphony Op.2 is a written for a chamber orchestra consisting of fifteen players.

Carl Vine’s XX (2009) was commissioned by the Australian Chamber Orchestra to honour the twenty years that Richard Tognetti had been its Director. A playful 4-minute exploration of the relationship between a chamber orchestra and its leader this delightful work for solo violin and string orchestra makes the perfect concert opener. Naturals for 'safety'. Programme Note This piece marks the conclusion of what could now be called 'The Nightshade Trilogy' three pieces which explore the contrasting worlds of Light and Darkness. As opposed to the earlier chamber work Nightshade which dealt with extremes of high and low pitches and the chamber orchestra composition Second Nightshade a two-fold piece contrasting darkness/anxiety and light/calm Final Nightshade for full symphony orchestra takes us on a journey in which the forces of dark and light struggle - and co-exist - in a predominantly polyphonic web with brooding undertones. The melodic point-of-departure is not surprisingly to be found in either of the two preceding pieces of the Trilogy but in an older piece Corpus Cum Figuris from 1985. Stephen Albert's Into Eclipse for Tenor and Chamber Orchestra. Full score.'Into Eclipse is based on Ted Hughes' adaptation of Seneca's Oedipus. The five episodes chosen astexts for this musical setting form an abbreviated version in song of this Roman dramatisation of the Oedipus myth.Seneca's play has no external action. As Peter Brook informs us in his introduction to the play '...it takes place nowhere...possibly it was read aloud in the bathhouse to friends.' It therefore seemed possible to take the essential elements of the tale and transform them into a rather complete musical statement that wasnon-theatrical yet dramatic in its own terms. Into Eclipse is thus not a monodrama nor even a solo oratorio but rather a 'Herosong.' It is somewhat in the tradition but not of course in the manner of earlyballadeers and minstrels who often set ancient stories and myths to music and performed these musical narratives for both court and country village.The story is sung from different viewpoints (that of Creon thechorus of citizens and of course Oedipus the king) all encompassed within the bounds of one man's voice and his complement of instruments. There is no concious attempt to 'paint' or emphasise particular words or phrases withinthe text nor was there an effort to musically heighten Seneca's already nightmarish vision with its withering onslaught of bloodthirsty images.
