King Arthur was the first of 28 scores Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) composed for radio between 1937 and 1947. It was an ambitious dramatisation of King Arthur’s life and times – part pageant part play part cantata – written by D.G. Bridson. This colourful suite incorporates the Introduction a dramatic Wild Dance some of the music underscoring the scenes for Galahad and The Holy Grail and two vivid battle scenes ending with The Final Battle and Apotheosis. King Arthur (scenes from a radio drama) for brass band should not be confused with a much longer orchestral suite which Paul Hindmarsh devised from the same source in1995. King Arthur (scenes from a radio drama) will be played by the 20 First Section finalists on 16th September 2018 at this year’s National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

Concerto No 3 for Euphonium and Band-Diamond Concerto est une œuvre de commande de la formation allemande Musikverein Mörschied dirigée par le Dr Eric Grandjean pour un concert avec un invité spécial le soliste Steven Mead. Ensemble ils ont créé cette œuvre le 28 avril 2012 au théâtre de la ville d?Idar-Oberstein.Cette commande représente l?un des points culminants d?une amitié de trente années entre le compositeur et le soliste leur relation ayant donné naissance à de nombreux enregistrements et concerts et maintenant à un concerto. Pendant la composition de cette œuvre Sparke avait sans cesse à l?esprit le son bien particulier de l?euphonium de Steven Mead et il a employé librement lavariété de styles que ce virtuose mondialement connu a adoptés au cours de sa brillante carrière de soliste.Le village de Mörschied se trouve à l?ouest de Francfort-sur-le-Main dans la région surnommée Route allemande des pierres précieuses célèbre pour son industrie de la joaillerie. C?est pourquoi le compositeur a décidé de saluer cette province en intitulant son œuvre Diamond Concerto. Les trois mouvements sont chacun nommés d?après un diamant célèbre :1 EARTH STARDe caractère plutôt sérieux ce mouvement débute avec une fantaisie libre pour le soliste sur un accord statique de l?orchestre. Vient ensuite un Allegro Moderato en mode mineur où de courts motifs sont progressivement répétés et développés par l?orchestre et le soliste.2 OCEAN DREAML?on pourra entendre ici une variante d?un extrait de Music for Battle Creek incluant une mélodie lente et émouvante que le compositeur écrivit alors dans l?optique d?une future interprétation réalisée par Steven Mead.3 BLUE HEARTSuivant l?idée de Steven Mead ce mouvement est écrit dans un style de be-bop et prend la forme d?une valse jazzy. ?Fanfare for a Friend? fut initialement composé comme morceau d?ouverture pour l?ensemble de cuivres ?Musica Mosana? et son chef d?orchestre Mark Prils. L?oeuvre commence par une brillante fanfare de cuivres dans laquelle est présenté le thème principal. Ce thème majestueux est traité de façon contrapuntique durant les 28 premières mesures. Vient ensuite un passage rapide qui marque le contraste et dans lequel un thème mélodieux se distingue d?un accompagnement plutôt rythmique. Un passage plein de virtuosité et d?entrain amène au grandioso qui reprend simultanément les deux thèmes dans un final éclatant.

Aussi ne compte-t-on plus les nombreuses adaptations du roman ni les nombreux historiens qui s?intéressent au très réel Charles de Batz de Castelmore d?Artagnan mort au siège de Maastricht en 1673. Letissu musical des Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers) s?intéresse davantage aux éléments de la personnalité d?un personnage qu?au rôle qu?il joue dans l?intrigue. La trame est vivante on y vit intensément. Maxime Aulio a orienté son choix sur D?Artagnan le parfait gentilhomme sensible et romantique qui se laisse facilement séduire par les femmes à l'image de la douce Constance Bonacieux dont il s'éprend et de la perfide Milady de Winter dont la beauté l?envoûte. Le premier mouvement - D?Artagnan - est fidèle au caractère du jeune noble provincial venu de Gascogne : enthousiaste et héroïque en toutes circonstances. Le second mouvement - Constance Bonacieux - est galant prévenant et passionné. Le troisième et dernier tableau est quant à lui aussi ensorceleur et sournois que la femme fatale qu?il dépeint Milady de Winter.

The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001. Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town. There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon. The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone. The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people. However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off. Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after! Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus. Self-taught she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet The Dutch Brass Ensemble The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability. Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble. Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music.
