This second volume of the songs of Scottish poet Robert Burns contains 70 songs excerpted from the chapter 'The Lasses' in a larger collection of 324 Burns songs compiled and researched by Serge Hovey. It includes songs expressing the poet's 'passion' for his wife Jean, and for 'that other species.' Robert Burns (1759-1796) spent his life collecting Scottish songs, using fragments of existing lyrics as the basis for his own poems, and wrote original lyrics for traditional melodies. Burns left for posterity about 270 poems and more than 300 songs which are usually printed without their tunes. Serge Hovey meticulously examined Burns' own sources, letters, and manuscripts to determine the origin of every tune and all the verses as well as Burns' intended match of words and music. He then arranged each song with highly imaginative and beautiful accompaniments geared for pianists with average skills. This volume is illustrated with reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints. Alfonso und Estrella D 732 Romatic Opera in 3 Acts In late September or early October 1821 Schubert and his close friend, Franz von Schober, vacationed in the countryside of Lower Austria. Their first stopover was at Ochsenburg Castle, which belonged to the Bishop of St. Pölten (a close relative of Schober’s), after which they moved on to St. Pölten itself. Roughly a year earlier, two stage works by Schubert had been performed in Vienna: the one-act singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder and the melodrama Die Zauberharfe. The librettos were both written by the seasoned Viennese playwright Georg von Hofmann, who blamed the press for the indifferent reception the two works weregiven by the audience. Schubert and Schober now decided, it would seem, to write a grand romantic opera uninfluenced by the workaday world of the theatre and beholden solely to their own ideas of what an opera should be. Not until 24 June 1854 was the opera finally performed in Weimar, under the baton of Franz Liszt. It only achieved success, however, in an arrangement by Johann Nepomuk Fuchs that was staged on many German and Austrian stages in 1881–2, allegedly with 'brilliant acclaim'. Volume 2. Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. With only one exception, Gade composed his works for male choir with accompaniment for Danish choral societies, numerous of which had been founded across the country since 1839. These societies were often closely connected with professional associations, making them equally important for musical and social matters. This volume contains five occasional works for male choir with accompaniment that were composed between around 1838 and 1883. Three of them were intended for church usage (two funerals and one wedding). Among the works for equal voices and accompaniment in this volume, 'Aarstidsbilleder” op. 51 is the longest. It was composed for the women of The Music Society in Copenhagen and conducted by Gade himself during the 1871/72 seasons.
