With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. During the last summer of his life, Franz Schubert completed the Mass in E-flat D 950. The occasion for the composition of this Missa solemnis cannot be clarified with certainty. Schubert did not live to see the premiere of his sixth mass, which was first performed posthumously in 1829 under the baton of his brother Ferdinand.Among other things, the editor has paid particular attention to the articulation. In order to be able to present Schubertâ??s differentiated use of accents in the edition, a new symbol has been introduced: an accent which is flexible with regard to its length, thus making it possible to precisely visualize its compositionally intended duration.

Schubert composed the Latin Stabat Mater, D 175, between the 4th and 6th April 1815, probably without any specific commission. The text had been appointed by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727 for use at the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the 15th September. The period over which the Mass in F major was written can be followed step by step by virtue of Schubert himself having written dates in the autograph score (Schubert wrote the work with a few interruptions between May and July 1814), and what prompted him to compose it is only too well known - the centenary of the Lichtental parish church -, but the day it was first performed was not clear for quite some time.
