Commissioned by the sound festival for The Scottish Flute Trio. First performance: November 13 2008. Duff House Banff Scotland. In this work all three players in turn play each of the three instruments - piccolo flute and alto flute - thus giving a contrasted sound to match the character of the four linked movements: hence the title. Sleepy using all three alto flutes begins on the lowest note - G. The mood gradually changes as they introduce higher pitches and faster rhythms as they 'wake up'. In Lyrical a flute introduces the melody which is then shared by a second flute and later by the alto flute. With Mischievous the piccolos arrive on the scene. The first oneincites another piccolo and then the flute to join in. The tempo quickens and after a brief climax the mood quietens leading to Peaceful. In this last movement all three instruments are played. In turn they present a lyrical melody but in different keys so as to suit their individual tessituras.

Par FRACKENPOHL ARTHUR. Divertimento is an original trio by Arthur Frackenpohl that was written at the request of a trio for a senior flute recital at the Crane School of Music. The first movement, Introduction, is in sonata form with two contrasting themes, closing section, short development and recapitulation. In the second movement, Passacaglia, the dorian theme is stated canonically, with variations on the eight bar theme and closing in quietly in the minor. The third movement is a lively Scherzo with a rhythmic first section employing some echo effects before moving into a more subdued and legato trio. The final movement is an energetic Fughetta, which uses the contrapuntal devices ofinversion, augmentation and stretto. Dans ses Four Seasons (Quatre saisons) Mario Valsania égréne le changement des saisons vécu par unenfant : le printemps synonyme dair frais de liberté et de courses à vélo lété qui se vit avec un soupçon d'insouciance lautomne qui signifie la rentrée scolaire et finalement l'hiver le temps des festivités de Noël. Il sagit dune piéce composée dans un style classique présentant toutefois des harmonies et des accents surprenants. Lobjectif du compositeur était de faire ressortir toute la richesse de la flûte traversiére par des traitscaractéristiques tels que le staccato ou le double coup de langue. Dans le quatriéme mouvement Winter plusieurs chants de Noël traditionnels peuvent être entendus.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Trois Pastorales for Flute Trio in 1964. As with his other wind compositions  Trois Pastorales was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learned during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions. The Trois Pastorales are named; 1) Bolivian 2) Cretan and 3) Sicilienne. This Tomasi piece is suitable to an advanced Flute Trio providing an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.
