On ne peut plus déterminer si la composition fut commandée par le comte Ferdinand Troyer, lequel tenait un salon musical à Vienne et jouait personnellement de la clarinette. En revanche, il est certain que Schubert composa l'oeuvre en quelques semaines au début de l'année 1824 et que la création eut lieu peu après chez Troyer.
