Meine eigene neue Orchesterkomposition hat den Titel ,,SCHREIBEN. Die praktische Aktion des Schreibens, als mechanisches Einwirken per Hand, Stift, Pinsel, auf eine Flache (Papier, Pergament, Stein etc.), ausgelost und gesteuert von einem kommunikativen Bedurfnis und, bei aller Spontaneitat, beherrscht durch die Regeln von Schrift und Sprache, ist fur mich einer der geheimnisvollsten Vorgange im zwischenmenschlichen Alltag, bei dem menschlicher Geist und tote Materie einander begegnen: Gedanken bzw. Gedachtes werden auf einer Flache - Papier, Pergament, Stein - festgehalten, ihr sozusagen anvertraut. Und auf diesem Umweg uber Sprache, Schrift und Gravur begegnen sie dem Geist des lesenden oder entziffernden Mitmenschen. Als Komponist aber frage ich: gibt es auch einen anderen Kausalitatszusammenhang, gibt es z. B. ein ,,autonomes Schreiben, eine sinn-freie Zeichengebung, durch entfesselte, losgelassene Fortbewegung der schreibenden Hand, wo der Schreibende seinem eigenen Schreiben nur noch staunend zusieht? Werden nicht in Japan Bilder, auch ,,abstrakte, geschrieben??? (In einem Underground-Film der 70er-Jahre uber den jungen Mozart sieht sich der Zuschauer versetzt in ein Zimmer eines italienischen Gasthauses, in dem der junge durchreisende Mozart am Tisch eilig die Rezitative einer seiner italienischen Opern zu Papier bringt. Mehr als eine Viertelstunde lang sind wir dabei, horen nicht die entstehende Musik, sondern das nervose Kratzen der Feder auf dem groben Notenpapier in nachmittaglicher Stille - nur der gleichmassige Pendelschlag der Wanduhr ist noch zu horen -, und wir erleben diese sekundare Klangwelt kaum weniger intensiv als nachher andere Horer die dabei stumm entstehende Musik.) Das Orchester in meinem Stuck ,,schreibt. Es fugt Strich zu Strich, versteht sich selbst als eine Art vielfaltiges ,,Schreib-Gerat. Wir als Horer lesen nicht das ,,Geschriebene, aber wir horen den Vorgang des Schreibens, den Bogenstrich, die Bewegung des scharrenden Holzstabs auf Fell oder Tamtam, und wir beobachten dessen Imitation bzw. Transformation durch - zeitweise auch tonlos - sich zu linearen Gestalten verbindende Blasinstrumente als eine Art klingender Schreib-Zeremonie. Es ergibt sich eine Musik, die gelegentlich ihren gedanklichen Ausgangspunkt vergisst und sich als autonome Klang-Situation fortentwickelt und verwandelt, und die schliesslich im hochsten Register eine Art ,,Kantilene be-schreibt. Wer das deutsche Wort ,,Schreiben (engl. ,,to write) schreibt, der schreibt dabei auch unweigerlich das Wort ,,Schrei (engl. ,,shout), und er schreibt auch das Wort ,,reiben (engl. ,,to rub). So emotional der erste Begriff gedacht werden kann, so nuchtern-praktisch ist der zweite. Von beiden Aspekten, samt ihrer Gegensatzlichkeit, ist mein Stuck gepragt. (Helmut Lachenmann, 2003)

John Herbeck, who conducted the initial rehearsals for its premiere at the Augustinerkirch on June 16, 1872, warmly declared that it stood beside Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in greatness. Bruckner, often self-critical as a composer, went on to revise the work no less than four times until it was finally published it in 1894. More often heard today in the concert hall than in the church, the sprawling, hour-long work is admired today for its powerful directness. This critical edition was created in 1944 for the Bruckner Gesamtausgabe by Robert Maria Haas. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.3.0: Timp: Org (ad libitum): Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo SATB: Mix Chor. The organ ad libitum is absent from the Haas edition.

This publication presents under one cover various short works for sundry orchestral scorings. Larghetto for Orchestra is MacMillan's orchestration (2017) of his celebrated Miserere for a cappella mixed choir (2009), a setting in Latin of Psalm 51, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy', the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri. The Larghetto orchestration was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Manfred Honeck's 10th Anniversary as Music Director. Memoire imperiale is one of a number of variations on General John Reids march tune Old Gaul commissioned from Scottish composers to mark the centenary in 1994 of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University. The Faculty was established following a bequest by General Reid (1721-1807), a former law student at the University and a renowned flute player and composer of marches for the BritishArmy, and he asked that an annual concert be organised at which one or more of his compositions be played. Composed in 2012 for the Britten Sinfonia, One is a monody in which a single line is passed around the instruments, painting it with different colours as it emerges and develops. Lasting only a few minutes, its singularity is maintained until blossoming in the lastfew bars. For Sonny (2011, orch 2013) and Ein Lamplein verlosch (2018, orch 2019) are short, private memorial tributes originally for string quartet and here rescored for string orchestra. Hirta was composed in 2016 as part of Deccas The Lost Songs of St Kilda project. Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland. After 86 years, the music of St Kilda was rediscovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who had been taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. The songs were 'reimagined' for the Decca album by various.

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique” in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. In this D-major symphony, composed in 1786, the slow movement entitled “Capriccio” is very free in its form, and its introverted mood stands in marked contrast to the exuberance of the other movements.
