Although his Signifying Riffs (1998) for percussion and strings is halfway there, String Quartet 1.5: Experiments in Living (2016) is the first proper string quartet by composer George Lewis. Borrowing its title from the writings of John Stuart Mill, Experiments in Living leads the performers through a series of idiosyncratic episodes featuring extremes of gesture and extended technique over the course of a single, 16-minute movement. Commissioned by the Fromm Foundation, String Quartet 1.5: Experiments in Living was composed for Spektral Quartet, who gave the premiere performance in October 2016 at Chicago\'s Harris Theater. This set of score and parts has been made available for sale by Edition Peters as part of the Peters Contemporary Chamber Series and includes full performance notes. George Nicholson's Salut for String Quartet. The death of Peter Cropper in May 2015 was an immeasurable blow to the musical community especially to those of us who knew him not only as a wonderful wise musician but also as a warm colleague and friend. His unceasing devotion to the cause of music and to the promotion of excellent standards in performance was in my experience beyond compare. The finest tribute we can pay him is to continue to make music to the best of our ability and to go on reaching out to continue to explore and learn. I always felt that I would need to commemorate Peter in a piece for StringQuartet the medium he was most obviously associated with and in Salut it is understandably the first Violin part that has pride of place. The piece develops contrasting textures and registers and above all it is concerned with the influence of the extremely high Violin writing at the beginning on the rest of the ensemble. - George Nicholson Salut was first performed by the Ligeti Quartet Firth Hall University of Sheffield 17 May 2016.

Un travail différent de 'Rhapsody in Blue ', le' Concerto pour piano en fa 'ou d'autres oeuvres de concert, mais une' charmante 'pièce, a admis Ira Gershwin, frère de l'écrivain et le texte de George Gershwin (1898-1937). En fait, 'Lullaby' la mise en quatuor à cordes est une oeuvre exceptionnelle: en dehors des 'Short Story' pour violon et piano la seule oeuvre originale de musique de chambre du compositeur, sans compter les oeuvres pour piano seulement. Gershwin fait un nom pour lui-même avec des comédies musicales, 'Porgy and Bess' de l'opéra jazz, des chansons, des pièces orchestrales comme 'Un Américain à Paris' ou 'Rhapsody', mais en 1919/1920, il a eu le temps pour ce petit travail occasionnel qui a été créée plusieurs fois dans un cadre privé et dont le thème qu'il a utilisé dans son travail sur scène 'Blue Monday' en 1922. Ce n'est que plusieurs années plus tard, le 29 Octobre 1967, il a été exécuté publiquement lors d'un concert pour la première fois. Il s'agit d'une charmante miniature, avec des effets sonores et délicieux accents puissants - un atout précieux pour le répertoire du quatuor. / Quatuor A Cordes
