The play-along book ?Playing with the Orchestra VOL. I? has been designed for flute, Bb clarinet, oboe, Bb trumpet, F horn, violin and cello. The original symphony orchestra part for each instrument is printed in its own edition. The orchestral recordings were performed by an 80-strong professional orchestra, the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Hernando Rico. The series includes many successful works by the composer Otto M. Schwarz, such as ?Around the World in 80 Days?, ?Nostradamus?, ?Dragon Fight?, ?The Story of Anne Frank? and most recently ?The White Tower?, compositions that also feature in the Top 40 of the world-wide Classic New Releases on Spotify.

Here the fourths, springing from an entirely different expressive urge, shape themselves into a defi nite horn theme, spread themselves out architectonically over the whole piece, and place their stamp on everything that happens. Thus it turns out that they do not appear here merely as melody or as a purely impressionistic chord effect; their character permeates the total harmonic structure, and they are chords like all others.' (Arnold Schoenberg, Theory of Harmony, 1911) The Chamber Symphony Op.9 heralded a breakthrough in Schoenberg's compositional style. While the work did not go hand in hand with the complete destruction of the old tonal system it does show an extension in chordal and melodic constructions. It's focus on the interval of the fourth rather than the third is stated right at the start with the horn fanfare and this leads into the use of the whole tone scale soon after. These two elements open up a new sound space which he would explore further in the works to follow. Volume 31 contains, among other works, the Piano Quartet, which was enthusiastically received by the critics in Rheinberger’s time: “The themes are noble, with significant content, the motivic development is rich and interesting, above all free from anything resembling a mould … and such a healthy musical wind blows through the entire work that I believe I am not mistaken if I forsee for this work a great success. ” This is how a contemporary critic reviewed the work. Indeed, op. 38 proceeded to become the most successful of Rheinberger’s chamber music works during his lifetime. The Sextet op. 191b is an effective arrangement of his Piano Trio No. 4 op. 191, for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and piano. In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part.The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. A solo oboe enters with cello in canonic reply and all the time the music builds in texture and

Cantata for soloists choir and orchestra-Lobe den Herrn meine Seele (Praise thou the Lord o my spirit) BWV 143Little is known about the genesis of “Lobe den Herrn meine Seele” (Praise thou the Lord o my spirit BWV 143.A transcription from the 19th century was for a long time considered the only source; the musical text of the “New Bach Edition” was based on this material.  Recently however a copy of the score from 1762 has become available.  It offers a more reliable musical text rendering a complete revision of the cantata necessary.On the basis of this new source the work is presented here as part of the“New Bach Edition – Revised” in what is presumably its original form in C major with three trumpets.  This orchestration is more typical of Bach’s writing than the version for three horns in the surviving B-flat major version.
