For solo Cello Timpani and Strings.Popule Meus was commissioned through the Magnum Opus project: Kathryn Gould founding patron and commissioner and Meet the Composer project manager. It was first performed on 6thFebruary 2010 by Yuri Hooker (cello) and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Micklethwate. Composer's Notes 'Popule Meus is a meditation on the Judaic and Christian text ?O my People whathave I done to you?? but itis also a Universalist contemplation of the wholesale rejection of God by modern man. However much manrejects God he cannot escape Him and indeed he is condemned to the supernatural by his deiformnature. InHindu terms he is the Absolute Ayam Atma Brahma (The Self is the Absolute). In this work the solo cello is the All-Compassionate One while the timpani represent man in his vain andpointless rejection. Although the solocello and strings and the timpani share the same material (four ideas aregradually revealed and they revolve four times during the piece) the timpani music is violent and becomesincreasingly frenzied and contracted while thecello and strings remain still and serene. So even in winning the Darkness loses and even in losing the Light wins. Passion Resurrection andRedemption; or in Hindu terms Atma (The Absolute) alone is real Maya (The Relative) ismerely illusion.'

Performance Score and Parts-This scholarly-critical edition is based on all the known sources whether printed or handwritten that have come down to us for these frequently played pieces. By closely scrutinizing the source material the editor has arrived at interesting findings that considerably differ from earlier editions of these works. Rather than taking as her principal source Le Clerc’s 1740 print of Sonatas I to VI – an edition probably made without the composer’s consent – the editor has examined the Naples and Wiesentheid manuscripts prepared under Vivaldi’s direct supervision. The editor has also managed to identify a previously unknown source forSonata RV 44. All departures from the sources in the printed text and all editorial additions are listed in the critical report. Cellists are thus given ready access to every alternative reading including deleted bars and the many inevitable variants in articulation. A detailed preface provides essential information on sources and their assessment with a section on performance practice offering valuable suggestions on interpretation. All of Antonio Vivaldi's works for violoncello and continuo in a single edition Scholarly-critical edition for performance purposes Detailed preface on sources and performance practice (German/English) With new findings that considerably differ from earlier editions 'This edition is invaluable for all performers of the Sonatas .' (Ensemble January 2004) 'This is certainly the definitive edition of these works.'(Strings August/September 2003)

It was a chance visit to a second hand bookshop in Nottingham that set me on the trail of Rossini's now well-known Duetto for cello and double bass. But the story begins earlier than that. In the 1960s I was studying the double bass at the Royal College of Music with Adrian Beers who was at that time principal of the English Chamber Orchestra on the front desk of the Philharmonia Orchestra and a member of the Melos Ensemble of London (then one of the leading ensembles of the world). I was working on the 'Dragonetti Concerto' as most young players do and I wanted to find out a bit about it. My teacher said he thought the autograph manuscript might be in the British Library which was all the encouragement I needed to secure a pass to the Reading Room so I could go and see for myself. There sure enough I found a large collection of Dragonetti's autograph manuscripts together with other bound volumes relating to his life. The papers had been lovingly collated and annotated by Vincent Novello one of Dragonetti's closest friends then deposited in the library before his departure to Italy in 1848 two years after Dragonetti's death. One of the volumes included a lot of letters about various engagements and music festivals copies of orders for strings Dragonetti wanted from Italy details about paintings he wanted to buy and numerous invitations to private functions. The manuscript of the 'Dragonetti Concerto' of course wasn't among the papers we now know it to have been written by Edouard Nanny a century or so later. One name that came up regularly in the documents was that of Sir George Smart. Smart had been a violinist in Salomon's orchestra and had played for Haydn at his London concerts in the 1790s. As a child he had learnt much about music from his father who had in turn been present at many of Handel's rehearsals when he was preparing some of his major works for the first time. Smart was also a fine keyboard player becoming organist of the Chapel Royal in 1822. As a conductor

In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part. The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. A solo oboe enters with cello in canonic reply and all the time the music builds in texture and

His best-known pieces for young violinists are The Infant Paganini and The Boy Paganini. Both appear here in their original version for Violin and Piano and for the first time in a transcription for Cello and Piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus. The Mollenhauer fantasia The Infant Paganini is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché legato spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics andpizzicato. It (BA 10693) can be mastered by young Cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Cello and can manage first to fourth position. The Boy Paganini is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre harmonics and pizzicato. Other challenges include chords on all four strings and simple passages in octaves. Haydn’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in C major (Hob. VIIb:1) was probably composed between 1762 and 1765 when he was already director of music to Prince Esterh zy. It may have been writtenfor the cellist in the court Orchestra Joseph Weigl (1740-1820) for whom Haydn most likely also wrote the solo Cello parts in his early symphonies. Weigl was a member of the Esterh zy ensemble from 1761 to 1769 andthereafter served as a principle cellist in various Viennese ensembles. The concerto was rediscovered by Oldrich Pulkert who in 1961 found an eighteenth-century manuscript copy (Prag National Museum Fonds Radenin) andpublished the concerto in 1962. Previously the existence of this piece was known only through Haydn’s entry in his private list of works (the so-called ‘Entwurf’ [‘draft’] catalogue). The Orchestral setting ismodest: besides the Strings (with a non-obligato Bassoon doubling the Bass part) there are two Oboes and two Horns which are reserved almost exclusively for the tutti passages. This Piano reduction is based on the text givenin the complete edition of Haydn’s works as edited by the Joseph Haydn Institute Cologne (Joseph Haydn Werke Series III Vol.2 with Preface and Critical Report published by G. Henle Verlag Munich 1981). The Cello partin the Piano reduction is identical to that of the complete edition and thus follows the Prague source as closely as possible even in the expression marks and in certain peculiarities of notation.

Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor Op. 85 his last notable work is a cornerstone of the solo Cello repertoire. In contrast with Elgar's earlier Violin Concerto which is lyrical and passionate the Cello Concerto written in the aftermath of the First World War is for the most part contemplative and elegiac. The four-movement concerto scored for solo Cello 2 Flutes 2 Oboes 2 Clarinets in A 2 Bassoons 4 Horns in F 2 Trumpets in C 3 Trombones Tuba Timpani and Strings did not achieve wide popularity until the 1960s however is now regarded to 'rank not only among his finest works but among the greatest ofits kind' (Michael Kennedy).Sir Edward William Elgar was an English composer many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Although Elgar is often regarded as ‘typically English’ most of his musical influences were not from England but from continental Europe.

Par DYSON GEORGE. The Cello Sonata by Sir George Dyson (1883?1964) is the most substantial of the composer?s earliest surviving works and is a welcome addition to the repertoire of romantic British cello music. Within Dyson?s small yet distinguished output, it merits recognition both as a significant instrumental score in its own right, and as a precursor of a corpus of scores expertly written for solo or ensemble strings. Evident throughout this work is Dyson?s appealing and characteristic strain of melody and harmony, both recognisably English and distinctly personal. / Date parution : 2021-11-03/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Leos Janacek wrote only two works for cello and piano of which only Pohadka (Fairy Tale) became established in the concert repertoire. Although he completed the work the composer did not want to have it published. The history of the work’s composition is long and complicated. Janacek began writing the work before 1910 however the Pohadka (Fairy Tale) only received its final form after a series of corrections in 1923. The second composition the Presto is incomplete. Only a sketch exists which Janacek did not develop further. The original tempo marking of Allegro was changed by Janacek himself to Presto. The work has beendiscussed under this title in recent Janacek literature. In the supplement of this edition an early version of A Tale is included. The source to this version is a copy owned by Antonin Vana one of the first interpreters of the composition. The early version of A Tale offers a valuable and interesting alternative to today’s known version with its marked differences such as the considerably changed ending of the first movement and the original form of four movements. Urtext from the Janacek Complete Edition All available sources have been taken into consideration A detailed new foreword by Jiri Zahradka (Czech English German) “Again Bärenreiter sets the industry standard for scholarship clarity of type layout and paper qualitiy.”(Strings July 2009)

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Pastorales for Cello and Piano was published in 1931 and is made up of six pieces. Martinu himself was a violinist and the beginning of his experiments in composing for solo instruments saw him write for strings. Pastorales for Cello exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky Debussy neoclassicism surrealism and jazz. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of double stops complexrhythms chromaticism and ensemble between the Cello and Piano. As a varied substantial work for the Cello repertoire Martinu's Pastorales is essential for the advanced performer.
