Variationen über die Caprice Nr. 24 im Stil des Modern Jazz. Par SAY FAZIL. The concert piece Paganini Jazz by Fazil Say, which was inspired by classical, modern and jazz styles, is reminiscent of the music of such greats as Scott Joplin, Art Tatum, Gershwin and Bernstein, and was originally designed as a charming encore work (1988); following the appreciative response of music lovers and, in particular, that of music critics, it was transformed over a perion of time into a more substantial work for piano. Briefly, the piece was rewritten and expanded a number of times between 1988 and 1995. We can evaluate the work as having taken its inspiration from Paganini's renowned '24th Capriccio', transforming it into 'variations on jazz' requiring virtuoso rendition as well as being a creation open to the addition of improvisations and a variety of arrangements. Throughout music history a number of composers have written various works inspired by the '24th Capriccio'. We can count among them Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov and Lutoslavski. In Say's work, however, a different aspect must be noted: the composer is prepared to add various 'developmental passages' and 'transitional improvisations' while interpreting this work in concert. Furthermore, when the work is considered as a short encore piece, it is abbreviated in a manner deemed suitable by Say. / Niveau : 5 / Répertoire / Violon, Piano, Guitare Basse et Percussion

Three arrangements including Ave Verum Corpus and the Lacrimosa from the Requiem.During the year 1771 when Mozart was 15 years old he and his father Leopold were touring Italy which was at that time the most formidable citadel of the music world. In the following four years the young Mozart was received at the homes and villas of Italy's aristocracy. He met the most famous musicians of the time including Niccolo Piccinni operatic rival to Gluck and Padre Martini from whom he was to benefit from studies in counterpoint. He also met many noted male soprano singers and for one the celebrated Venanzio Rauzzini he wrote in 1773 the motet Exsultate Jubilate from whichcomes the well known Alleluia. At the end of his life only 19 years later in Vienna 1791 Mozart was very ill and working on a number of massive works such as the operas The Magic Flute and Titus also the Requiem. Titus was completed in 18 nerve-shattering days as it had to be performed in Prague in September 1791. At its premiere it was a complete flop. This affected the now overworked almost penniless composer's spirit and he returned to Vienna suffering from mental and physical exhaustion. Rest was denied him. The Magic Flute had to be finished for its premier on September 30th 1791. The task of the Requiem still faced him. In this weakened state Mozart thought that he was in fact writing his own requiem reading evil omens into the commissioning of the work. He thought someone had calculated the precise time of his death and was thus troubled with sombre thoughts. He completed the first two of the twelve parts. The next six parts were in an unfinished state and his manuscript ceased at the Lacrimosa. Süssmayer who was working closely with Mozart at the time was given the task of finishing the Requiem.Ave Verum Corpus is also one of his final works. It is a setting of an anonymous hymn written as a motet for Anton Stoll the choirmaster at Baden in June 1791.Mozart was a composer of great genius who

Urtext edition with articulation markings - Soft-cover performing editionWhen you think cello, you think of Bach's immortal cello suites. The suites take centre stage in the cello literature. They are timeless and beautiful and accompany cellists from their student years up through their professional career at the highest level. Appropriately and not surprisingly there are countless editions of the suites. But the composer's autograph has not come down to us. It is lost and this circumstance has always been a major challenge for editors. The four surviving handwritten sources and the original first edition of 1824 differ in many details, the articulation and phrasing being particularly ambiguous. At Bärenreiter, having published the New Bach Edition and presently publishing the New Bach Edition-Revised, we feel particularly committed to the cello suites. We have approached the editorial problems from several angles and have published editions that meet the needs of students and professional performers alike. This new edition, based on volume 4 of the New Bach Edition - Revised (NBArev), now completes Bärenreiter's collection of the cello suite editions. Andrew Talle has fundamentally reassessed the relations between the surviving sources and has drawn conclusions regarding their evaluation and consequently the genesis of the suites. His evaluations are augmented with thorough discussions of the instrument for which the suites were conceived and the interpretative practices in Bach's day.The musical text of the edition is based on these findings. It approaches the composer's original intentions as far as the sources will permit. Details regarding articulation were deemed as being viable and were added to the musical text if they appeared in the majority of the sources. 'This edition does not present a perfect reconstruction of the lost autograph - no editor could claim to do so. Instead, I have attempted to provide musicians and scholars with a reliable version of the surviving musical text of the six cello suites and to shed light on the options which the Bach sources offer.?- Urtext edition with articulation by the editor on the basis of intensive source comparison- Musical text identical to the text in New Bach Edition - Revised Volume 4, Book 1- Detailed introduction (Ger/Eng) / Violoncelle

(+)
Born into a family of bankers that had lived in Florence since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) studied under Pizzetti at the city’s Conservatoire. He soon became one of the leading members of the young Italian school which broke with the tyranny of bel canto to return to the instrumental tradition of the Italian masters from the Baroque era. In 1928 Amédée-Landély Hettich a vocal teacher in Paris asked Castelnuovo-Tedesco to write a vocalise for the Répertoire moderne de Vocalises-Études the publication of which he was supervising at Leduc. Castelnuovo-Tedesco’scontribution entitled Vocalise-Étude for Medium Voice became so popular that it was immediately transcribed several times over. The present adaptation for cello and piano was created with prior consent from the composer by the famous Catalan cellist Gaspar Cassadó in 1930. The works opens with a poignant lamento that grieves the tragic fate of the Jewish people; it is followed by a folk dance whose “brisk and stubborn” movement marks with panache an imperious refusal to yield to resignation. The composer adopted the same proactive stance himself when in 1939 fleeing Mussolini’s antisemitic laws he decided to emigrate to the United States a land of refuge to which he would remain faithful until his death some thirty years later.

(+)
Chaconne. Par LERDAHL FRED. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music. My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach’s D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms’s Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern. My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. Fred Lerdahl/ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Par PAREDES HILDA. When Paris abducted Helen and provoked the Trojan War, Agamemnon and Menelaus were absent from home for ten years. Agamemnon's wife Clytaemnestra had small cause to love him: he had married her by force after killing her former husband Tantalus, and then gone away to war. On his way he sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia at Aulis in order to be able to go ahead with his enterprise in Troy. He brought back with him King Priam's daughter Cassandra, as his lover. Clytaemnestra greeted her travel-worn husband, unrolling a purple carpet for him, and led him to the bathhouse. / Date parution : 2022-07-20/ Répertoire / Baryton, Trombone et Piano

(+)
Score Parties. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. When Beethoven wrote these three quartets he was 15 years old and a composition student of Christian Gottlob Neefe in Bonn. They reveal a strong Mozartian influence while the brilliant piano writing already gives a sense of the mature Beethoven. He may conceivably have written the works for the wealthy Mastiaux family in Bonn, as he gave piano lessons to one of the daughters and the other three siblings played violin, viola and violoncello. The sole source for the quartets is the autograph score which contains many overwritings that shed light on the works' original conception and possible alternative readings. Although Beethoven never published the pieces in his lifetime and is not known to have performed them, he reused their melodic and thematic material in later compositions. Beethoven preserved the autograph score to the end of his days ? perhaps an indication that the quartets meant a great deal to him. The first edition was published by Artaria in Vienna one year after his death, albeit with the pieces in a different order and with many errors in the musical text. Bärenreiter's scholarly performing edition of the Piano Quartets WoO 36 is edited by the Italian pianist Leonardo Miucci, a specialist in the performance practice of keyboard music from this period. The edition not only presents the correct readings, it also sheds light on the young Beethoven's expressive notation and provides a plausible explanation for the distinction he made between dots and strokes to indicate staccato./ Répertoire / Quatuor pour Piano, Violon, Alto et Violoncelle

London with its bustling musical scene always provided Haydn with welcome surroundings at a time when the Flute was extraordinarily popular among English amateurs. The Earl of Abingdon an accomplished flautist undoubtedly enjoyed playing these entertaining trios. Abingdon was a member of Haydn?s circle of acquaintances in London and a composer in his own right: a theme from one of his songs (?The Lady?s Mirror?) servedHaydn for a set of variations in the second trio. Neither of the men could have foreseen the huge success that these cheerful and straightforward pieces would enjoy among music-lovers all over the world.

Debussy composed this work in summer 1880 in Fiesole Italy when he was 18 years old. At the time he was the musical travelling companion of Nadescha von Meck Tschaikowsky’s famous patroness. Most of the autographmaterial was thought to have been lost and was only discovered over 100 years later in 1982 in the estate of Debussy’s pupil Maurice Dumesnil. When Henle published the first edition in 1986 the music world welcomed theTrio with open arms. Ensembles rushed to play it and numerous recordings followed. Although formal conventions prevail the work displays a melodic freshness as well as inflections and phrases that are typical ofDebussy.

for Violoncello and Piano-Cesar Franck?s Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the Violin repertoire a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck?s friend the cellist Jules Desart was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the Cello part into the Piano score of the original edition. For this purpose thePiano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to ?Sonate pour Piano et Violon ou Violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for Piano and Violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter?s new scholarly-critical publication. This Barenreiter edition also includes a separate movement ?Mélancolie? first published after Franck?s death in 1911 again for the same instrumentation Piano and Violin or Violoncello. This short piece is based on a solfège exercise and was written at the height of the composer?s creative powers at about the same time as his famous Violin sonata. The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the two compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng) a complete list of sources editorial notes and a Critical Commentary (Eng).Pioneering new Urtext editionInformative text on the genesis and reception history of the two compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng)Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng)Also available:Sonata; Andantino quietoso Op.6; Mélancolie for Piano & Violin BA9425.Sonata arranged for Piano & Viola BA10918.Sonata in A major arranged for Piano & Flute BA8734

(+)
Pour Quator á Cordes-Born in 1947 Laurent Duvillier-Wable trained under pianist Suzanne Joly and studied composition with Michel Puig. The latter a student of Ren? Leibowitz introduced him to the mysteries of Sch?nberg and Webern's twelve-note composition. To create a coherent œuvre Duvillier-Wable drew on the array of possibilities offered by chamber music in his series of six Sonatas composed between 1992 and 2007. Sonata IV For String Quartet was written in 1994 the year his father – painter Ren? Duvillier a friend of Charles Estienne and Andr? Breton – fell gravely ill. Divided into four movements thecomposition contains two beautifully expressive musical references: the Lamento religioso refers to Bach's Passion according to Saint Matthew by quoting the choral 'Was ist die Ursache aller solcher Plagen' (No.19: What is the cause of all this suffering?) when Jesus distressed by his imminent agony asks his disciples to watch over him. The Agitato final borrows the inexorable 'Must it be? It must!' theme from Beethoven's Quartet No.16 in F that crowns this poignant work.
