Le Voyageur sans bagage [The Traveller Without Luggage] which had been premiered in 1937 with music by Darius Milhaud was reprised on 1 April 1944 at the Théâtre de la Michodière; Francis Poulenc was asked to compose new stage music. The entire unpublished score lay undiscovered until Bérengère del’Épine a librarian at the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris announced the existence of a manuscript in the Association de la Régie Théâtrale collection. Poulenc finalised the score between 19 and 21 March 1944. It contains nine songs all written for a small instrumental ensemble including Oboe Clarinet Cello and Piano. However at the end of the manuscript the composer echoes the second song – Lent [Slow] – and creates another version for Cello and Piano; curiously the original version of the song has not been erased in the manuscript. Poulenc seems to suggest that we consider the piece for Cello and Piano that we have published here as a different piece of music. It was premiered on Wednesday 23 January 2013 by Marc Coppey accompanied by Jean-François Heisser in the organ auditorium of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) during the symposium for the fiftieth anniversary of Poulenc’s death. Given in a dramatic context some elements allow us to get an idea of the character of the piece which Benoît Seringe Poulenc’s beneficiary judiciously chose to name Souvenirs. Though only a minor pendant to the great Cello Concerto Anton n Dvorák?s Rondo Op. 94 is an effective and entertaining piece that belongs in the standard repertoire of every cellist. Dvorákcomposed it in December 1891 shortly before leaving for America and he gave the work its première performance on 3 January 1892 with his friend the cellist Hanus Wihan during his farewell concert tour. To produce this urtextedition Milan Posp sil consulted the autograph score and first edition not only for the Piano version but also for the orchestral version of October 1893.

Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. Beethoven's composition of sonatas for Cello and Piano was unprecedented; he had no models in the works of Haydn or Mozart. Only recently had the instrument begun to liberate itself from its role in the traditional basso continuo. The first two Sonatas in this book comprising Op. 5 were composed in 1796 while Beethoven was in Berlin. He would not embark on another such project until 1807 when he composed the Sonata in A (Op. 69). Eight years later he would return to the idiom to write the two last Sonatas (Op. 102).
