Robert Schumann’s Violoncello Concerto Op. 129 can be regarded as the first great concerto for this instrument’s repertoire. It is thus somewhat surprising that this work had an extremely problematic reception history at the outset. Schumann wrote the score in 1850 during his Düsseldorf years but there was neither a concrete occasion nor a soloist for a world premiere. After its publication more years elapsed before the world premiere. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that Schumann’s Cello Concerto finally made its breakthrough as a repertoire piece. The Urtext edition is based on theoriginal print of the parts and the Piano reduction which had still been supervised by Schumann. In addition the autograph of the score was consulted for purposes of comparison. The internationally renowned soloist Heinrich Schiff took part in the preparation of the edition for Violoncello and Piano. His experiences have been incorporated into his arrangement of the solo part. With his comments Schiff also provides valuable tips on the interpretation of the work.

Although Schumann’s style suits the clarinet extremely well he did not write a great deal for the instrument The Three Romances Op.94 were written for oboe with clarinet and violin as suggested alternatives. The Three Romances contrast strongly with one another and this is important to bring out when interpreting these delightful miniatures. This version is for Clarinet with Piano Accompaniment and has been edited by Yona Ettlinger.The solo Clarinet in A and Clarinet in B flat parts are also included on separate inserts.

The first edition was quickly sold out and no further editions followed. EMB has undertaken to issue a new edition entitled Cello & Piano with the content unchanged. The two volumes contain a selection from 200 years of music. Eight Baroque sonatas are included apart from the famous D minor one by Corelli there are some that are appearing in a modern edition for the first time in 300 years. In addition to cyclical works (Haydn: Sonatina Mozart: Divertimento Vivaldi: Concerto)and sets of variations (Beethoven Tartini) there are many shorter pieces as well not only the famous minuets by Boccherini Mozart and Beethoven but also works published for the first time here.
