Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto in D is an adaptation of the original Oboe Concerto in C which the composer reworked in 1778. The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on both instruments making it one of the more important Concerti in the woodwind repertoire. Concerto in D is in three movements; 1. Allegro aperto 2. Adagio non troppo and 3. Rondo: Allegretto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of G major. A Dutch flautist of the time Ferdinand de Jean commissioned Mozartfor four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However the composer who famously disliked the Flute only completed three quartets and one concerto. Instead of composing a second concerto Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. De Jean did not approve yet the Concerto in D for Flute remains as popular to this day as the Concerto in C for Oboe.

In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. Variations Sur Un Thème De Mozart is a piece composed by Reynaldo Hahn and dedicated to Philippe Gaubert. Composed after a tune by Mozart and scored for the Flute this piece features a main theme and a total of seven variations which follow one another. The Flute score features many trills especially in the Variation 2 some fast rhythms and up to 6 flats on the key for the Variation 4. It would require a good mastery of techniques for these challenging parts. Reynaldo Hahn was a naturalised French composer conductor theatre director and singer. Best known as a composer of songs he also wrote many piecesand melodies for different instruments.

Rondo in e minor for Flute and Piano-Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart did not have an easy time of it throughout his life his compositions were always compared to those of his father. It is only recently that he has slowly begun to come into his own. Les classiques de la flûte n° 80 (transcr. Marcel Moyse)-Number 80 of the collection 'Classics for Flute' by Marcel Moyse Minuet Of Mr. Duport is a piece initially composed by Mozart and arranged for Flute and Piano accompaniment. The main theme starts with a Tempo di Minuetto which is then followed by four variations and a final part Allegro ending up with a Cadenza. Quite amazing this piece is difficult to play and will fit upper intermediate players. It is a great piece to listen to that would definitely work well in a concert or in a recital.

The Flute Concerto in D and the Andante in C written by Mozart in 1778 are two of the most popular works for the flute. This new edition edited by Trevor Wye follows earliest known sources and the flute part is considered an authoratative Urtext edition.
