Sadie Harrison's Three Jennys for solo Oboe. Performing score. Three Jennys was written especially for Jenny Porcas who gave the work its first performance on 7 June 2014 at the Purbeck Arts Week Festival in St. Mary s Church Swanage. The three miniature movements are entitled Spinning Jenny (based on the Lancashire folksong Poverty Knock associated with the textile industry of the nineteenth century) Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummelaria) which twists andturns like the plant itself and Jenny Wren heard here in virtuoso voice. Three Jennys is dedicated to Jenny with affection.

Volume 2-French oboist Louis Bleuzet (1874-1941) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won first prize for Oboe. Being a virtuoso of the instrument himself his The Technique of the Oboe is very well-informed. Bleuzet's career saw him become soloist at the Paris Opera as well as a professor of the Oboe at the Paris Conservatoire. Published in 1937 The Technique of the Oboe was compiled by the composer toward the end of his life. The second volume gives focus to scales in thirds and fourths mechanical exercises whole tone scales and the chromatic scale. With detailed instruction in English French andGerman this Bleuzet study book is highly versatile and essential to the progression of all oboist's technique.

Version 2010-“Books talk to each other” - Umberto Eco’s statement could just as easily apply to music as Les Citations for Oboe Harpsichord Double Bass and Percussion by Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) brilliantly proves. Written in 1991 the score was reworked by the composer for the Festival d’Auvers-sur-Oise where the new version premiered in June 2010. The origin of this work goes back to For Aldeburgh 85. Written for the 75th birthday of singer Peter Pears the piece takes up a fragment of Peter Grimes whose leading role had been written by Britten for the beloved tenor. Dutilleux adds a page titled FromJanequin to Jehan Alain in which appears a song from the Renaissance composer “L’espoir que j’ay d’acquerir vostre grace” used by J. Alain in his Variations for Organ on a theme by Clément Janequin. The junction between the two parties is made through an Interlude that introduces the “wolf’s moan” theme from the ballet Le Loup (The Wolf) composed by Dutilleux in 1953 for the troupe of Roland Petit. This subtle tangle of quotations forms a shimmering and sensual work where the uniqueness of an authentic artist powerfully asserts itself.

Five North-Eastern Scenes for oboe and piano was commissioned by the Kunstförderverein Kreis Düren e. V. for the 2016 Spannungen chamber music festival in Heimbach Germany. 'The piece is in five shortmovements. The first third and fifth explore space and melancholy while the 2nd and 4th are fleeting and at times more violent. This is the third work in which I have used the paintings of the Scottish artistJoan Eardley as a starting point. Her vast emotive snow scenes painted outside in the brief periods of calm between snow storms capture the striking yet bleak beauty of North East Scotland an area where I grew up but have notvisited for many years.' - Helen Grime.
