Malcolm Arnold's 'Clarinet Concerto #2, Op. 115', was dedicated to Benny Goodman, and first performed by him as part of the 'Red Rocks Music Festival' with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August 1974. The third movement, known affectionately as 'The Pre-Goodman Rag', is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. Par DOBSON SIMON. Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining uptempo concert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says, 'Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to.” It was first performed by Oslofjord Brass in Norway and in its wind version by Harmonie Shostakovich, Switzerland. Chansons de Normandie was commissioned by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and premiered on BBC Radio 2 as part of their D-Day broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall on June 6th, 2014. This 4 minute piece is based on three traditional Normandy folk songs: Les Metamorphoses, Le marchand de velours and Le corselet. Chandons Te Deum HWV 281. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. Handel composed the 'Te Deum” in B-flat major HWV 281 in 1718 for the future Duke of Chandos, hence its nickname 'Chandos Te Deum”. Here it is called 'Te Deum for Cannons” after the Duke's stately home named Cannons where the first performance took place. The unusual scoring for flute, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, two violins and basso continuo plus a choir (one soprano, three tenors and a bass) probably reflects the musicians which were available at Cannons, bearing in mind that three tenors were used also in 'Acis and Galatea”, the masque which was composed at almost the same time. Though in many respects this 'Te Deum” is reminiscent of the 'Utrecht Te Deum”, its smaller forces tend to give it more the character of chamber music. This edition is based on the Urtext from the 'Halle Handel Edition” (BA 10708), which offers the first complete scholarly text of the music for the 'Te Deum”./ Répertoire / Orchestre à Vent

Robert W. Smith has chosen three castles and several colorful characters known for legendary deeds from Irish history and folklore to put to music. The use of tinwhistle, the Irish drum bodran and hints of traditional Irish melodies add ethnic authenticity and fascination to the performance of this work. The profound impression it makes on us is due in part to the sequence of variations on a death motif that seems to have been borrowed from the beginning of the second Kyrie from Bach's Mass in B minor. Written in 1890, it was commissioned by the publisher Novello for the Birmingham Music Festival and premiered there under the direction of the composer on 9 October 1891. For this performance, Dvorák used a copy of the score which he had personally examined and which later served as the engraver's copy. The Dvorák scholar Klaus Döge succeeded in tracking down its location and evaluating this important source for the first time. It contains the 'Fassung letzter Hand' and, moreover, offers valuable insights into Dvorák's conducting workshop. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concertos: the Mozart expert Henrik Wiese edits the central work genre of Viennese classicism according to the current status of international Mozart research. Mozart wrote the Horn Concerto K. 417 - like the other works of this genre as well - for his horn-playing friend Joseph Leutgeb. The jokes which the composer made at Leutgeb's expense are wellknown. For example, he called the dedicatee a 'donkey” in the autograph, and, as Henrik Wiese evidences in his preface, Mozart also occasionally enjoyed a bit of tomfoolery with the soloist in the musical text as well. Otherwise the editor's task was anything but amusing. The main source - the autograph score - is incomplete: missing are the close of Movement I as well as the entire slow middle movement. For these two sections, Wiese used a copy of the score from the archive of the publisher Johann André. The unusual circumstance that Mozart generally left the horn part almost unmarked recurs in the Concerto K. 417 and was deliberately maintained in the Urtext edition./ Répertoire / Ensemble à Vent

Par HOUBEN KEVIN. Guardian Angels dépeint la légende du pasteur Louis Henri Antoine Bähler en utilisant entre autre le Psaume 34. La partie nord-ouest de la région de la Veluwe, et en particulier Oldebroek (Pays-Bas), possède une riche tradition religieuse, dont témoignent les bâtiments monumentaux de l'église. Ils racontent une histoire mouvementée, dans laquelle le pasteur Bähler a joué un rôle particulier. Inspirées par son arrivée comme pasteur en 1870 dans la ville voisine d'Oosterwolde, deux grandes communautés ecclésiastiques ont vu le jour, avec les bâtiments religieux typiques. Cependant, la région a aussi connu des troubles sociaux importants. Cette composition est une méditation sur la personnalité marquante du pasteur et en particulier sur l'histoire de la protection des anges: Un soir, le pasteur Bähler avait prêché à Oldebroek et marchait le long du sentier de l?église entre les champs pour aller à Oosterwolde. Le temps était sombre et orageux. Certains opposants de Bähler lui avaient tendu une embuscade et voulaient le noyer dans un fossé près du sentier. Lorsqu?ils virent qu?il n?était pas seul, mais en compagnie de deux autres hommes, ils abandonnèrent leur projet. Le lendemain, Bähler rencontra ses adversaires. Ceux-ci regrettaient ce plan qu?ils n?avaient heureusement pas pu mettre à exécution. Lors de cette rencontre, Bähler affirma catégoriquement avoir été seul à marcher sur le sentier de l?église la veille plutôt qu?accompagné par deux autres hommes. On en conclut qu?il avait été protégé par des anges. Si le Psaume 34 est au centre de cette composition, c?est en raison de sa puissante mélodie mais aussi parce que le texte du verset 4 de la version rimée de ce psaume s'accorde bien avec la légende extraordinaire du pasteur Bähler: ?L'ange du Seigneur monte la garde ?autour de ceux qui le craignent,?il les met hors de danger.? Une deuxième cellule mélodique et harmonique est la transformation musicale du nom ?Bähler?. Cette cellule est utilisée en variation d?accords de tierces majeures et mineures, tant comme idée principale que comme apothéose, mais également comme cellule d'accompagnement ou de motif de pont entre d'autres constructions mélodiques et rythmiques.
