The decade between Edward Elgar’s marriage in 1889 and the publication of his famous Nimrod Variations in 1899 was possibly the happiest period of his life: he was comfortably settled into family life but the burdens of national fame had not yet begun to take their toll. His beautiful and haunting composition The Snow dates from this time: as a relatively unknown composer he was free to work on what he liked and the growing popularity of competitive choral festivals led him to write a series of part-songs of which this is undoubtedly the best-loved and most performed today. The words come from a poem by his wife Alice and the workhas been arranged here by the composer for two Sopranos two Violins and the Piano.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach wrote his first great vocal composition the Magnificat in 1749 at the age of 35. It bears all the earmarks of “audition music” i.e. a piece that organists and choir directors had to submit when applying for a new position. This feature is especially evident in its stylistic variety which makes the work a rewarding and colorful challenge for all church choirs. Special attractions are the work's contrapuntal passages which are very similiar in sound and structure to those of J. S. Bach’s B minor Mass. The Black Knight (Op.25) is a secular cantata for chorus and orchestra composed in 1893. It takes its text from a poem from H. W. Longfellow which is itself a translation of a poem in German by Ludwig Uhland. The choral parts act as a backing to the orchestra showing how Elgar was developing his orchestration techniques and talents although this development went unnoticed until the sudden success of the Enigma Variations in 1899. Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of England’s best-known and most-loved composers. He was self-taught as composer coming from outside the musical and social establishment which allowed his music to be fresh and unencumbered.
