Jan Dismas Zelenka's Te Deum in D for SATB and Orchestra.Two settings of the Te Deum by Jan Dismas Zelenka have been survived: the Te Deum in D major ZWV 145 of ca. 1724 and the present Te Deum a due cori in D major ZWV 146 which was composed in 1731. Whereas the Te Deum ZWV 145 is scored for five voices (?soli e tutti?) and an orchestra including two trumpets and timpani the setting of the Te Deum a due cori which includes five soloists and two four-part choirs as well as four trumpets and timpani and soloistic flauti traversi is magnificently realized in a more decisive manner. The large solemn scoring suggests that the work was composed for aworship service on the occasion of the birth of the Electoral Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony.

The smooth jazz ballad Sanctus 7/8 Benedictus and soulful Agnus Dei complete this inspiring Mass setting. Underpinned by Todd’s characteristic jazz harmonies and melodic craftsmanship it is suitable for performance both liturgically and as part of a concert by Mixed Choirs of all abilities. Haydn began the work in 1782 and recently the original parts to the Missa Cellensis were found in the organ loft of the splendid baroque church at Mariazell.Haydn’s “Mariazellermesse” has always been one of his most popular works. It includes a Pianoreduction for rehearsal purposes.Geoffrey Burgon (1941-2010) was a British composer best known for his film and television scores such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Brideshead Revisited and MontyPython’s Life of Brian. He studied Trumpet and Composition at the Guildhall and spent the early part of his career as a successful Jazz musician.
