This is the piano reduction version. The Clarinet Concerto was written in 1968 in response to a commission from the Royal Philharmonic Society. It was first performed in February 1969 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis with Gervase de Pyer as soloist at the Royal Festival Hall London.

La réputation du compositeur Bohême Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) a toujours été quelque peu éclipsée par celle de Bedrich Smetana et Antonín Dvorák. C'est fort dommage, pour Fibich, bien qu'il est mort jeune, apporté une contribution tout aussi importante à l'émergent styl national tchèque avec son large éventail de compositions. Après le début des leçons de piano avec sa mère comme son premier maître, le garçon ensuite à l'école de musique à Prague, puis au Conservatoire de Leipzig, où il apprend son métier comme compositeur. Il passe quelques mois enseignement de piano à Paris et poursuit ses études avec Vinzenz Lachner à Mannheim. La clarinette est l'instrument que j'ai le plus mis à l'honneur dans mon catalogue, de mon solo Bug jusqu'à Quasi lento où elle est un soliste permanent à l'intérieur d'un grand orchestre en passant par Mit ausdruck, concerto pour clarinette basse et orchestre. Depuis longtemps, j'éprouvais le désir de la confronter au piano dans une logique de sonate. Le centenaire de la disparition de Claude Debussy dont la Rhapsodie est un modèle du genre m'en a donné l'occasion. Waiting est un 'solo orchestré' dans la mesure où toute la matière pianistique semble déterminée par l'instrument à vent. Une longue mélodie mélismatique débute l'oeuvre, le piano entrant de façon très discrète par une note répétée comme un glas. Puis le piano agit en doublure de l'instrument soliste et enfin en relai, prolongeant la clarinette par des résonances ou des imitations. Malgré les nombreuses sections très rythmiques et virtuoses, le caractère monodique de l'ensemble et la permanence de tenues évoquant le bourdon médiéval créent un sentiment d'attente qui justifie le titre.
