Written in a quick 3/4 time, this engaging composition uses an attractive harmonic language, expressive melodic lines, and clever orchestrations to invoke the fairy-tale imagery of Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry in A Child's Garden of Verses. The playful nature of the piece moves between a lilting quality and a more lyrical expressive nature. Wonderful writing and an excellent change of pace for any concert.

De muziek geeft een beschrijvingvan een winters tafereel op het land: een zonsondergang, sprookjesachtig besneeuwde landerijen en bossen. In de verte klinken de bellen van een slee die langzaam maar zeker naderbij komt. Maar dan keert de rust weer terug, terugin het verstilde landschap…A Winter’s Tale hat keinen direkten Bezug zum Thema Weihnachten, kann also ebenso zu (vor-) weihnachtlichen Anlässen wie auch bei anderen Konzerten im Winterhalbjahr aufgeführt werden. Die Musik beschreibt eine Winterszenerie auf dem Lande: Ein stiller Sonnenuntergang, tief verschneite Felder und Wälder, von ferne klingen die Glöckchen eines Schlittens, der sich als Dreigespann entpuppt, bevor zum Schluss des Werkes wieder Ruhe in die Szenerie einkehrt.Philip Sparke a composé cette pièce pour le Western Plains Wind Consortium, placé sous la direction de son fondateur, Daniel Baldwin. Philip Sparke a réalisé une scène d’hiver en pleine campagne. A Winter’s Tale s’ouvre avec une série d’accords soutenus, joués par les bois, et colorés par le timbre cristallin des cloches, tandis qu’un saxophone alto chante une complainte crépusculaire. Un passage orchestral court, mais dense, prélude l’exposition du thème principal. Les couleurs douces et vaporeuses enveloppent les champs et les forêts enneigés. L’orchestre reprend le thème tandis que l’on entend au loin un tintement de grelots annonçant le passage imminent d’une tro ka. Une fois passée, la musique s’apaise et le thème principal revient avant de laisser la place au motif d’ouverture qui vient conclure la trame musicale.

It is my hope that this arrangement will be equally satisfying for the young band with ample rehearsal time or for the more mature band that wants a holiday favorite they can perform with limited rehearsal. The piece is presented first in a lush chorale format with the use of extended jazz harmonies. Special care should be given to balancing and tuning the inner voices for the most pleasant sound. After the lush opening on the famous refrain the arrangement moves to the bridge in an up-tempo swing. In this section the percussion is written to imitate a drum set, but if a set is available it may be preferable to use it in order to get the right feel. Following the bridge is another statement of the refrain followed by a hymn-style section by the reeds with jazz interjections by the brass straight out of the famous Perry Como rendition. This is followed by a D.S. to the bridge, one more refrain and then a short coda It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this arrangement. This short, “cool†suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane, which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.Because of the four-part instrumentation, School's Cool is suitable for smaller strengths, taking into account that it is important to divide parts evenly among the players. Childrenâ??s Oak was commissioned by the wind band from Beauquesne, France. This solemn work pays homage to a city particularly affected by the two World Wars and is inspired by the knowledge that the city of Beauquesne needed to recover from these terrible episodes in its history. The title has its origin in the roots of the word â??Beauquesneâ?, the beautiful oak tree. It is a beautiful slow piece for your concert, or as a resource to work on phrasing and intonation, or alternatively as a warm up piece.Childrenâ??s Oak is geschreven in opdracht van het blaasorkest van het Franse Beauquesne. Dit plechtige werk is een eerbetoon aan een plaats die in de beide wereldoorlogen zwaar is getroffen. Het is ge nspireerd op de gedachte dat de gemeente Beauquesne zich moest herstellen na deze verschrikkelijke periodes uit haar geschiedenis.
