Als die alte Mutter (Songs My Mother Taught Me) is the fourth of Anton n Dvo_ák’s Gypsy Songs (Opus 55), a cycle he composed in the year 1880. This moving song was written to a German poem by Adolf Heyduk, and in the course of time, it has been performed and recorded by great singers like Nellie Melba, Joan Sutherland and Renée Fleming. The appealing melody is known to a large public. In this edition, two versions have been combined: an instrumental adaptation of the song, and an adaptation for soprano with a concert band accompaniment - both made by Tohru Takahashi. In 1878, on a commission from his publisher, Anton n Dvorák wrote a series of eight Slavonic dances. Modelled on Johannes Brahmsâ?? famous Hungarian Dances, although in contrast to Brahmsâ?? work, Dvorák used no original melodies. Wil van der Beek has arranged No. 7, a brisk 2/4 dance, as well as No. 8, a passionate, exuberant furiant in 3/4.

Fascinated by the expressive power and spirit of the gypsy music from Hungary, Brahms used mainly traditional melodies in his Hungarian Dances as well as themes from compositions in similar musical styles. No. 5 and No. 6 are the most well-known of his Hungarian Dances and are popular as encores at the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic.

Inspired by the Slavonic Dances of Czech master AntonÃn Dvořák, Joseph Compello has written his own Furiant, a Bohemian dance, usually in triple meter with frequently shifting accents. This dazzling little original piece makes much of the contrast between 6/8 and 3/4. This variety of rhythmic pulse gives the piece tremendous energy and momentum. Slavic Scherzo is a selection that will energize the band and delight the audience in equal measure.

Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity’s best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remainsa mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises theRoman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra’s femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love thatMark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third andlast section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of thejealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar’s son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his ownlife. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History’s most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directedby Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary.

The title of the suite Early Hungarian Dances from Gömör suggests the arrangement and harmonization of dance tunes, but this three-movement cycle is far more than that: in fact, the old court dances that provide the thematic material have been freely thought through and brought to completion. The composer has breathed new life into the 18th-century melodies, as Zoltán Kodály did with the Galanta and Marosszék dances, Antonin Dvo ák with Slav dances, and Johannes Brahms with those of Hungary. The chief virtues of the work are its colourful, varied instrumentation, the tasteful combination of its archaic style with the musical language of our day, and not least the fact thatits every bar is enjoyable to play and easy to listen to.

The convent of St. Florian was the place of work of the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner. It was in the rural setting of this convent with its marvelloaus church that Bruckner composed many of his great symphonies. St. Florian Choral is Thomas Doss’ modest tribute to this great master whose music has left its permanent mark on the composer’s musical life.

Venezuelan pianist and composer Moisés Moleiro Sánchez was born in Zaraza on March 28, 1904 and died in Caracas on June 18, 1979. His most popular work is Joropo, composed for piano solo. This charming work is a typical dance from Venezuela in 3/8 time. Johan de Meij, who was appointed regular guest conductor with the Simón BolÃvar Youth Wind Orchestra in 2010, orchestrated Joropo for wind orchestra. It was written as an encore piece for the SBYWO, and is dedicated to the founder of El Sistema, Maestro José Antonio Abreu. It has become the favorite encore for the SBYWO for their concerts around the world.
