Just as Serge Rachmaninoff's piano virtuosity ranked him among the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, his compositions for piano and orchestra won him an important position among modern composers. Among the works that ensure his reputation are the first three piano concertos, reprinted here from the authoritative full-score Russian editions.
Rachmaninoff wrote the stirring Piano Concerto No. 1 in the years 1890–91, while he was still a young student at the Moscow Conservatory, and revised it nearly three decades later in 1917, when he began to devote his life mainly to his international career as a piano virtuoso. The immense and enduring success of the Piano Concerto No. 2, completed in 1901, has made this romantic work one of the most performed and recorded in the concerto literature and one of the most familiar compositions in all of music. The powerful and expressive Piano Concerto No. 3 was composed for a concert tour of America, during which Rachmaninoff appeared with great success as composer, pianist, and conductor. Like the first two concertos, it remains a repertoire favorite in concert halls around the world.
All three acclaimed works are reprinted in this finely made yet remarkably inexpensive Dover edition. Musicians and music lovers will find it a convenient single-volume source from which to study intimately three major works of the twentieth century.

Par DOBSON SIMON. Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempo concert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says, 'Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to.” It was first performed by Oslofjord Brass in Norway and in its wind version by Harmonie Shostakovich, Switzerland. Giovanni Benedetto Platti (vers 1690 ou1696 ?-1763) fut musicien de la cour àWürzburg et Bamberg de 1722 jusqu'à samort. Il fait partie des musiciens dont l'oeuvreest documentée par des extraits dans ' Monumentsde l'Art Musical en Bavière '. Levolume propose à chaque fois six concertospour violoncelle et six sonates pour trio danslesquelles, aux côtés du violon, le violoncelleressort clairement comme soliste. Le critèrede sélection - 28 concertos pour violoncelleet 20 sonates en trio de Platti nous sont parvenusà travers les âges - a été pour cetteoccasion de prendre des oeuvres qui n'ont jamaisété publiées jusqu'à présent. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Haydn composed his Symphony No. 77 along with his Symphonies Nos. 76 and 78 for a planned journey to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H.C. Robbins Landon calls these works the 'English symphonies” as they are stylistically closely linked to the 'London Bach”, Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as 'Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend”, meaning that they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the 'Works of Joseph Haydn”. The Bärenreiter catalogue now includes the complete performance material for several 'Sturm und Drang” symphonies as well as all the London and Paris symphonies./ Répertoire / Conducteur

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concertos: the Mozart expert Henrik Wiese edits the central work genre of Viennese classicism according to the current status of international Mozart research. Mozart wrote the Horn Concerto K. 417 - like the other works of this genre as well - for his horn-playing friend Joseph Leutgeb. The jokes which the composer made at Leutgeb's expense are wellknown. For example, he called the dedicatee a 'donkey” in the autograph, and, as Henrik Wiese evidences in his preface, Mozart also occasionally enjoyed a bit of tomfoolery with the soloist in the musical text as well. Otherwise the editor's task was anything but amusing. The main source - the autograph score - is incomplete: missing are the close of Movement I as well as the entire slow middle movement. For these two sections, Wiese used a copy of the score from the archive of the publisher Johann André. The unusual circumstance that Mozart generally left the horn part almost unmarked recurs in the Concerto K. 417 and was deliberately maintained in the Urtext edition./ Répertoire / Conducteur

The four works presented in this volume – 'Frühlings-Phantasie” op. 23, 'Frühlings-Botschaft” op. 35, 'Die heilige Nacht' op. 40 and „ Beim Sonnenuntergang' op. 46 – were composed between 1852 and 1870. All of these works belong to the 'concert piece” genre, as the title pages of the respective first editions suggest. The works' instrumentation is varied: While „ Frühlings-Botschaft ' and „ Beim Sonnenuntergang' are composed for mixed choir and orchestra, 'Die heilige Nacht” calls for an additional solo alto. 'Frühlings-Phantasie” is not scored for choir at all, juxtaposing the orchestra with four solo voices and piano. Conçu en tant que pièce humoristique de circonstance à l’occasion du concert de Carnaval de son ami le violoncelliste Charles-Joseph Lebouc en mars 1886, le Carnaval des Animaux obtint un tel succès que Saint-Saëns en demanda, peu de temps après, l’interdiction d’exécution et de publication. Il craignait, de fait, que cette «Grande Fantaisie zoologique» - consistant en 14 courtes pièces pour onze instruments - ne vînt faire de l’ombre à ses compositions sérieuses. Cinq mois seulement après la mort du compositeur, elle fut quand même imprimée et entreprit alors - dans sa version originale comme sous forme d’innombrables arrangements - son cortège victorieux dans le monde entier.
C’est ainsi que le Carnaval devint alors l’œuvre véritablement la plus populaire du compositeur français, tandis que son originalité musicale lui permet d’être abordée fréquemment dans l’enseignement musical ou jouée par des orchestres d’élèves.
