Rachmaninov wrote Vocalise for Voice and Piano but did not set a text to it unlike the other songs in the Op. 34 set. It immediately became popular and the composer fashioned several transcriptions of the work including one for Piano and another for Orchestra. This edition is arranged for Flute and Piano.

Ernesto Köhler's fantastic Flute Concerto Op. 97 actually requires the accompaniment of a large orchestra. The orchestral material is available on hire with Musikverlag Zimmermann. The Concerto is characterized mainly by the high virtuosity. The audience in the early 20th century loved the display of technical possibilities of a musical instrument. Ernesto Köhler himself was regarded as unsurpassed in the clean interpretation of his work and the fine tone he coaxed from the flute. His Concerto was frequently performed by leading soloists in Europe and America in his time.

pour flûte ou violon et piano-Camille Saint-Saëns completed the Romance in D Flat Major on 25 March 1871. If in his concertos for solo instrument and orchestra Saint-Saëns freed himself from the Viennese classical model (reconfiguring it with originality but in the light certainly of the formal experimentations of Schumann and of Biedermeier virtuosity) in the Romance opus 37 and other works of similar form (opus 27 36 and 48) he adopted the Romantic ternary Liedform (A–B–A) – in particular that of Schumann’s Stücke and Mendelssohn’s Lieder ohne Worte – and transcended the idiomaticity of the respective solo instruments nowinterchangeable ad libitum (Flute or Violin in the case of opus 37) thereby making the pieces more widely usable and emphasizing their cantabile quality.

The great talent of Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) showed very early: At the age of 12, she published her first composition. Georges Bizet, a friend of the family, predicted her great future. After her successful debut as a pianist in Paris in 1877, she began busy concert activities as a solo pianist, chamber musician and conductor in many European countries as well as in the USA and Canada.Although many of her compositions became bestsellers during her lifetime, they are almost all missing in the concert programmes of today. Only the Concertino for flute and orchestra Op. 107 is still performed regularly. The demanding piece was written in 1902 as a competition piece at the Paris Conservatoire - initially still with piano accompaniment. The orchestral version was composed by Chaminade two years later.The piece begins with a wide melody and then turns into a virtuoso solo section which is followed by a cadenza. This work originally for orchestra was one of two new pieces added to Arnold's English Dances of 1951 to complete the score of Kenneth MacMillan's Solitaire first performed in 1956 by the Royal Ballet at Sadler's Wells Theatre London. This arrangement is by Alan Poulton.

La réputation du compositeur Bohême Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) a toujours été quelque peu éclipsée par celle de Bedrich Smetana et Antonín Dvorák. C'est fort dommage, pour Fibich, bien qu'il est mort jeune, apporté une contribution tout aussi importante à l'émergent styl national tchèque avec son large éventail de compositions. Après le début des leçons de piano avec sa mère comme son premier maître, le garçon ensuite à l'école de musique à Prague, puis au Conservatoire de Leipzig, où il apprend son métier comme compositeur. Il passe quelques mois enseignement de piano à Paris et poursuit ses études avec Vinzenz Lachner à Mannheim. En juin 1932, le compositeur Paul Hindemith a passé quatre jours à un pensionnat de Plön pour travailler avec les jeunes. Il écrivit courtes pièces instrumentales en instruments divers, allant de trio enregistreur à pièce orchestrale. La musique est devenu connue sous le titre de ' Plöner Musiktag ' et est toujours très populaire aujourd'hui. Il se compose de quatre parties : Morgenmusik - Tafelmusik - Kantate - Abendkonzert.
