Par SAUMELL MANUEL. Select 'Contradanzas Habaneras' by 19th century Cuban composer Manuel Saumell (1817-1870). Saumell is known as the 'Father of nationalism in Cuban music'. In more than 50 Contradanzas Habaneras, Saumell never repeated himself, for within those 8 or 16-bar phrases, he was capable of astounding rhythmic and melodic invention. This group of contradanzas were originally written for the piano and arranged here for flute and guitar by Elias Barreiro. Towards the Night for flute and guitar. Par WESSMAN HARRI. Harri Wessman's Pan and the Nymph Pitys (1979) for flute and guitar bears the first symptoms of his later style, the texture being softly dissonant. In an old mythological dictionary the composer found that Pan had had some love affair with an other nymph than famous Syrinx as well, with Pitys (greek pine-tree). So the listener may think of Pan in the vital A-sections and imagine the nymph in the languishing B-section and coda of the ABA form. Towards the Night (1978) for flute and guitar belongs to Wessman's previous world of tonal entertainment music. It is a melodious ballad, characterized by a short-long rhythm, a lot of seventh and altered chords and a passage, where the guitar takes the leed and plays the melody in tremolo. Siamo sempre nel mondo del tango con il compositore argentino Maximo Diego Pujol, il quale cerca di lavorare sul materiale folclorico trasformandolo con armonie più vicine a quelle utilizzate ai giorni nostri negli arrangiamenti delle composizioni del genere pop americano o del jazz modale. La pubblicazione è un dittico per flauto e chitarra che non richiede, da parte degli esecutori, un grande impegno strumentale, se non quello di rendere al massimo queste emozioni e i sentimenti che la danza ci propone. I due brani hanno come sottotitoli Bulevar, un valse con il sapore armonico del tango e come secondo pezzo Batacazo che, invece, fa chiaro riferimento alla danza argentina anche per le sue connotazioni ritmiche-melodiche. I due brani sono ben strutturati e i due strumenti dialogano tra di loro. Anche se alla chitarra è af?dato il ruolo di accompagnamento, non mancano momenti dove l'impianto tematico è di sua esclusiva competenza.
