Score-John Adams emerged in the last decades of the twentieth century as one of the most influential and widely performed American composers since Copland. 'The Chairman Dances' is a 'foxtrot for orchestra' that emerged as an offshootof the composer's 1986 political opera 'Nixon in China'. It has become one of the composer's most popular works. In this piece from the third act of the Opera protocol and ceremony are forgotten as the audience is ledinto the apparent privacy of the characters' bedrooms to hear their intimate discussions. Each sings of his or her current personal concerns while at some level the couples (Dick and Pat Chairman and Madam Mao) connect with eachother on the emotional plane of nostalgia. The Nixons reminisce about their early pre-public married lives. The Maos look back to their youthful idealism and budding romance and foxtrot together to the wistful tune that formsthe basis of this composition. The chugging and coloristic flashes that begin the work give way to the dance theme proper in the strings. The work 'runs out' instead of ending in imitation of the hand-wound gramophone which hadaccompanied the dancing of the Maos in earlier happier times.First performed in January 1986 by the Milwaukee Smphony Orchestra the piece was commissioned by the National Endowment For The Arts.

Adam Falckenhagen (1697 - 1754) was a German lutenist and composer of the late Baroque period travelling from court to court throughout his life eventually settling in Bayreuth. It was there that he won the favour of Wilhelmine of Prussia Margravine of Bayreuth a lutenist herself and the sister of Frederick the Great. He composed a variety of music for lute including this Concerto in F Major in three movements: Allegro Andante and Vivace. This edition includes the full orchestral score orchestral parts as well as guitar and lute parts. Victor Van Puijenbroeck has adapted the original solo part and included in the set are parts for both lute (the part has been adaptedfrom lute tablature to modern notation) and guitar (capotasto). Nostradamus is probably the best-known prophet of the last 1000 years. He lived at the time of the Inquisition and his predictions and medical therapies as a physician caused him to face the wrath of the church forcing him to flee many times. Following the loss of his family to the plague he devoted himself to clairvoyancy. He predicted many events in history in coded form and although there are many ways to interpret these many are believed to be accurate and Nostradamus is still considered to be a unique personality. Whether he is denounced as a charlatan or promoted as a myth he has surely moved humankind with his prophecies.Otto M. Schwarz soundtrack composer since2001 wrote a cinematographic work about this man who is probably the best-known prohet of the last 1000 years.

Clouds of Forgetting Clouds of Unknowing (1991-95) contains four different musical textures. In the WhiteSilence (1998) has three. For Lou Harrison (2002) reduces this to just two. In Dark Waves (2007) I finally got to one. When Ifirst heard that piece I began to wonder if I could sustain asimilar sound for a longer span of time. The result is Become Ocean a meditation on the vast deep and mysterious tides of existence.Thetitle is borrowed from a mesostic verse that John Cage wrote in honor of Lou Harrison's birthday. Likening Harrison's music to a river in delta Cage writes: LiStening to it we becOme oceaN. Lifeon this earth first emerged from the sea. The Concerto for Violin was written in early 2012 for Philip Ficsor. The four movements conceived separately are intended to have the feeling of a suite rather than a verbose heavy interpretation of the concerto form. The first movement A Little Parlour Music carries the subtitle after Poulenc in a reflection of the lightness and charm of that composer's work. The second movment Remembrance of Things Past is the most expressive of the movements. The third movement Santa Barbara Rag is full of syncopated rhythm and humor with even a slight reference to another well-known rag. And the fourth movement John Adams Light looks back at the early minimalism of Adams with itsrepitition and constant motion. The concerto is available with piano reduction and for rental with the full orchestra accompaniment.
