'Beggars' Palace' is the name of a fictive railway station a metaphor that can evoke many associations for example as a place from which one journeys on where one is forced to stay for a short or long period or a place where one simply gets stuck and must watch others journey on. The fictive station has something worn-out and shabby about it but the worn and shabby can have its own poetry and beauty. At the end the music stands still for a minute or two while a voice talks about Beggars' Palace. 'Beggars' Palace' was composed in January 2000 for the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. Anders Nordentoft

The melodic point-of-departure is not surprisingly to be found in either of the two preceding pieces of the Trilogy but in an older piece Corpus Cum Figuris from 1985. Over the ensuing years I've dreamt on and off of 'doing something' with the opening measures of this older work perhaps even building a new composition on that very simple inward-looking time was ripe and there's a nice nostalgia angle to the idea: Corpus Cum Figuris was the first piece of mine to be

John Corigliano (b. 1938) is an American composer. One of his most enjoyable compositions is The Mannheim Rocket commissioned by the Mannheim orchestra in the year 2000. It takes inspiration from theRocket of the title – a famous compositional device invented by the orchestra in the 1700s. From there it swiftly traverses 200 years of German music cleverly hiding quotes from some of the most famous orchestralworks of the era rising to its zenith before falling back to earth – exactly as a real rocket would. Described by the composer as a “marvellous journey” this orchestral piece is one of the mostentertaining in the repertoire – both to play and to listen to.

Light Overture - A Symphonic Entertainment was composed by Poul Ruders in 2006. Commissioned by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Principal Conductor Justin Brown for Alabama Power Company’s 100 Year Anniversary Concert. Light Overture subtitled A Symphonic Entertainment is a short piece for symphony orchestra lasting approximately eight minutes. Light Overture is focusing on two interpretations of the word light: ”light” as in the absence of darkness and “light” as in easily comprehensible; in other words a piece with few or no metaphysicalconnotations. It is just a piece setting a festive mood as is often the case with this sort of short “concert opener”. However the journey through Light Overture is not entirely happy-go-lucky. Once in a while slightly darker colours are introduced for the sake of variety and contrast. And formally the composition is quite strict: an outright Prelude and Fugue the former sliding seamlessly into the latter. The Fugue juggles not only its own tune but also picks up stuff from the Prelude. Poul Ruders May 2006

for Large Ensemble. Par BORBOUDAKIS MINAS. Z-4383 by Minas Borboudakis is a 12-minute work for large ensemble (1(=Picc).1.1(=BCl).1 – 1.1.1(=BTbn).0 – 2Perc – Acdn – Pf – Str(1.1.1.1.1 or String Orchestra) – Electronics). It describes the journey of the wagon of the same name in which the body of the politician and pacifist Grigoris Lambrakis, also called 'Z', who was murdered in 1963, was transported from Thessaloniki to Athens. In the scene from the cult novel Z by Vassilis Vassilikos, the author lets the soul of Grigoris Lammbrakis fly over the train. Train noises, distorted fragments of speech, as well as lines rising ever higher unfold in the music. Sequences expressing pain, longing, hope and despair return as wordless instrumental quotations, attempting to portray the unspeakable before the soul leaves the body at the work's conclusion. The world premiere took place on 20 July 2018 with the Academy of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Carter. The score (EP 14315) is available for sale as part of the Peters Contemporary Library. The performance material can be hired. / Date parution : 2022-09-07/ Répertoire / Orchestre

It begins gently with an evocation of the Missouri River and then unfolds as something of a journey through a landscape. In the early years of our century when vital new forces were revolutionising the arts Russian-born Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) was one of the visionary pioneers who sought a new musical language. At least a full decade before the advances of Stravinsky and Schoenberg Scriabin had begun the process of a complete break with all musical conventions. By 1905 he was immersed in a search for a way to express in sound the mystical and theosophical ideas obsessed him. Scriabin’s last two orchestral works were the products of a virtual delirium of composing. Simultaneously refining his poem called Poem of Ecstasy andcompleting the symphony that grew out of it (and shared its name) Scriabin never forgot the rapture of composing this work about creation and self-fulfilment: “I gasp for breath but oh what bliss! The very meter kindles the meaning…” Prometheus: Poem of Fire – Scriabin’s last and most revolutionary symphony – portrays Man’s epic journey from the mists of beginning time to a wonderous self-realisation given the gift of fire and light to make creative vision possible. Massively scored Prometheus incorporates a “colour Organ” to bathe the performance space in a vast interplay of coloured lights. For the music professional and every student of composition orchestration and conducting both scores are strikingly original and instructive. Equally fascinating are Scriabin’s approach to composition the extraordinary sonorities of his orchestra and his fanciful often supercharged performance instructions that replace conventional words for tempo mood and expression.

Corona - The Solar Trilogy No. 3 for Orchestra was composed by Poul Ruders in 1995.Programme note:CORONA makes the final part of the SOLAR-TRILOGY a huge symphonic triptych about the life and behavior of the Sun. The first'panel' GONG depicts the birth life and final collapse of our nearest star the second ZENITH describes in its ultra-slow tempo the patient rise of the Sun toward midday ferocity and its subsequent setting. CORONA then is a symphonic 'portrait' of the phenomenally hot whispy brim encircling and radiating from the Sun a sizzling halo of electrons and photons visible only during a total eclipse. Formally CORONAfollows the process of such totality in progress:the gradual eclipsing by the Moon - total darkness with thefierce sparkling outer corona - the gradual 'rebirth' of the light toward the full gl.ory and warmth of the Sun.Besides the obvious astronomical narrative of the SOLAR-TRILOGY there's a metaphysical angle too underlying each of the three compositions: GONG in spite of its apparent energy may be the most pessimistic of them all epitomizing the death and ultimate annihilation of the prime source of Life itself. ZENITH is a hommage to human aspiration and spiritual endurance and CORONA ends with Hope and Glory after a journey from depression throughtotal despair. Super-structurally the zenith of ZENITH makes the zenith of the entire trilogy i.e. when the E- flat of the unisone horns in ZENITH is heard we are exactly halfway through the collected work.Poul Ruders

Par MATTHEWS COLIN. Colin Matthews’s Turning Point (2006) represents a bold stylistic breakthrough for its composer. Out of a whirring, motoric scherzo comes a jolting sea change: an austere, glacial string chorale of searing intensity that, with gritty resilience, gradually comes to overwhelm everything else.
Commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, this 25-minute journey from complex momentum to expressive simplicity displays all the ingenious craft we have come to expect from Matthews, together with a new-found emotional directness.

Based on the Critical Edition- Orchestra material on hire. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The large-scale form of 'Symphony No. 9' is unusual in a number of ways. It reminds in no way of the ninth symphonies of famous predecessors. Two slow movements, an Andante comodo at the beginning and an Adagio at the end, form the frame for two of the most parodistic and embittered inner movements that Mahler ever wrote - a ländler-waltz combination, and the 'Rondo-Burleske', a bitter, ironic movement that is derisively dedicated 'to my brothers in Apollo'. The most extraordinary part of Mahler's last completed symphony must certainly be the slow finale - a 20-minute long intensively singing movement laden with conflict that includes references to earlier works by Mahler, in slow motion as it were ('Urlicht',' Ablösung im Sommer', the 'Scherzo of Symphony No. 3', 'Der Abschied' from 'Das Lied von der Erde', and 'Oft denk' ich, sie sind nur ausgegangen' from the 'Kindertotenlieder'); it indeed seems that a circle is being closed. Sinfonische Fantasie-The tone poem Pohjola’s Daughter Op.49 - a ‘Symphonic Fantasy for Large Orchestra’ - was written by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius in 1906. The story is a variation of Orpheus in the Underworld depicting a hero (Väinämöinen) who spotted the beautiful ‘daughter of the North’ (Pohjola) seated on a rainbow. The hero asked her to join him but she agreed with the condition that he should be able to perform a number of difficult tasks – most notably building a boat from fragments of her distaff. However the hero’s attempt was in vain as he was thwarted by evil spirits and injured himself withan axe. He gave up the challenge and continued his journey alone.A full score for Prokofiev’s popular Kalevala-inspired symphonic poem Pohjola’s Daughter Op.49.

Vltava (The Moldau) is the second in Smetana's Ma Vlast set of symphonic poems written for his native Czechoslovakia and named after the river that passes through Prague. The music is very programmatic in the Romantic sense carefully and vividly depicting the journey of the water from the springs to the rapids. Deeply and affectionately nationalistic the music carries the listener through a Peasant Wedding and a Forest Hunt with touches of enchantment from the Moonlight: Dance of the Water Nymphs. Vltava is a work very much of its time featuring so many of the characteristics that now define the Romantic era from our modernperspecyive and is unsurprisingly one of the most popular and widely performed Symphonic Poem of the repertoire.Scored for: 2.1.3.2/2(1asax)(1tsax).2.2.0/timp.1perc/str
