Par SIBELIUS JEAN. Five multi-movement trios for piano and two string instruments by Sibelius are known from the years 1883?1888. The ?large? trios, such as the Havträsk and Korpo Trio (JS 207, JS 209), were written for the classical piano trio scoring of violin, violoncello and piano. Apparently, Sibelius kept composing trios to play among his family and friends, having in mind to be one of the musicians himself. Chamber music was an essential part of social life. When listening to Sibelius? trios, one cannot help but notice that the repertoire included many works of Viennese Classicism. Although Sibelius's feelings towards his youthful works were not exactly uncomplicated, Sibelius biographer Otto Andersson later reported ?that the master, in later years, missed [the Korpo Trio] very much and would have been very pleased to see [it] preserved.? / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Répertoire / Violon, Violoncelle et Piano

Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Since their publication in the New Mozart Edition, Mozart's sonatas K. 10–15 count as piano trios. Furthermore, the title of the first edition, published by father and son Mozart in 1765 reads 'Six Sonates pour le Clavecin qui puevent se jouer avec l'accompagnement de Violon ou Flaute Traversiere”. In other words, these pieces are harpsichord sonatas that may be accompanied at will by a violin or a transverse flute. In a partial press run of the first edition a cello part was included. Our new edition is the first to take these conflicting formats into account by presenting two separate versions, one being the unaltered harpsichord part, the other a full score with separateinstrumental parts for violin/flute and cello. The harpsichord part [CV 51. 010/10] is indeed capable of standing by itself and requires no instrumental expansion. The melody instrument, in contrast, merely function as an accompaniment or contribute brief interjections, or, in the case of the cello, reinforce the left hand of the keyboard. In other words, K. 10–15 are not only Mozart's earliest piano trios, they are also his earliest keyboard sonatas to survive intact./ Répertoire / Violon, Violoncelle et Piano

Light And Matter was jointly commissioned by the Library of Congress Britten Sinfonia Norrbotten NEO and the Aeolian Chamber Players in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Bowdoin International MusicFestival. Composed in 2014 by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho the piece is for Violin Cello and Piano. Saariaho states that her inspiration for this work came from looking out of herwindow in New York at the changing lights and movements of Morningside Park. The piece manages to accurately represent the dynamism of movement and kinetic energy through the musical interplay of the threeinstruments. The piece saw its world premiere at  Bowdoin International Festival on July 30th 2014 with Renee Jolles on Violin Nicholas Canellakis on Cello and Benjamin Hochman onPiano.

Par WENNAKOSKI LOTTA. Lotta Wennäkoski tells about her 10 minute long work Päärme (Hem) for piano trio: 'We often speak in music of crafting in a figurative sense, and craftsmanship is, for the composer particularly, a traditional professional virtue. I personally have from time to time nevertheless been interested in the concrete images aroused by handicrafts, the way fabrics feel, and sewing. The pi-ano trio Päärme/Hem has a pulsative character, especially in the outer sections, and the idea of steady but erratically colourful stitching prompted the amusing and highly unusual word I chose for the title of the piece. The hemming in this trio is cheerfully brisk, though the result is not al-ways even intended to be over-neat or regular. For noise sounds are also an intrinsic feature of a hand-made texture. As is often the case with me, my source of inspiration in composing was the fact that the Sibelius Piano Trio would be giving the first performance. The slow, melodic material of the static middle section is to a great extent indebted to the knowledge of just how succulently such delicate, inten-sive lines can sound in the hands of ace players.' After an early work and a discontinued attempt in 1831/32 Mendelssohn made his breakthrough in this important chamber music genre in the summer of 1839 with the Piano Trio in d minor op. 49 which was to be followedsix years later by the Trio in c minor op. 66. On publication of the first trio Schumann took the opportunity to describe the composer as the ?Mozart of the 19th century? whereby he was obviously alluding to the mixtureof Classical and Romantic stylistic elements. The musical text of these two famous Trios has been thoroughly revised to reflect the latest scholarly findings. In addition HN 1297 also includes a Flute part for thealternative version of op. 49 (Flute instead of Violin) that Mendelssohn himself made.
