Piano Sonata in b minor op. 5-During his youth Richard Strauss composed a large number of works for piano solo among them numerous sonatas. Yet it was only the Sonata in b-minor that he obviously considered important enough to want to see in print. It was composed in two versions presumably between winter of 1880 and spring of 1881 and published one year later. Here Strauss still plainly follows his compositional forebears from German Romanticism. The two middle movements of this demanding sonata in particular directly recall Mendelssohn???s Songs Without Words??? and scherzi. This is the first Urtext edition of this piano sonata.

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). For piano-Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontsovka in the Ukraine on the 23rd of April 1891. Soon showing a talent for piano and composition by the time he was fourteen he was attending the St. Petersburg Conservatoire where he received extensive schooling inpiano harmony composition and conducting. Prokofiev was greatly interested in contemporary composers (Reger dIndy Debussy and Richard Strauss) and quickly made a name for himself with his revolutionary aesthetic language of great harmonic andrhythmic impact. His compositions were inspired by Symbolism and Futurism two artistic movements predominate at the time. Prokofiev attracted attention through his early works – the Etudes Op.2 and the Pieces Op. 3 and 4 – owing to his specialtechnique and percussive treatment of the piano (similar in some respects to Bartok) although he was also capable of rich melodic invention.Actually composed in 1907-08 before his Four Etudes for Piano Op. 2 Prokofiev’s Four Pieces for Piano Op. 3 and 4 were only published in 1911. Concert pieces some show Scriabin’s influence on the composer especially in the titles.

Par SINDING CHRISTIAN. Christian Sinding (1856-1941) gained worldwide fame with his piano piece 'Frühlingsrauschen', which is likely to be his most famous work still today. The '5 Klavierstücke' Op. 97, created in 1909, are bravura pieces the late Romantic harmony of which is sometimes reminiscent of Richard Strauss. The effective brilliant piano setting is characterised by a widely elaborated melody and can be easily mastered by the advanced player. Large arpeggios characterise the first piece 'Des Morgens'. 'Auf dem Wasser' is an evocative tone painting in swaying 12/8 time with powerful unison passages in the middle section. 'Intermezzo' appears capricious, with dance-like figures. 'Gewitter' is a brilliant concert study in the style of Liszt.
