Concerto for String Orchestra - the magnum opus of Grayna Bacewicz (1909-1969) the outstanding composer and violinist - was composed in 1948 and at once became one of the most frequently performed works of this Polish artist. This masterpieceof neoclassicism fascinates as much by its invention and virtuosic briliance as its harmonious combination of formal elements of a traditional nature with new tonal ideas. The form of the three-movement Concerto oscillates between that of the baroqueconcerto grosso and the early classical sonata cycle. The neoclassical tendency is evident above all in the articulation of the musical structure in keeping with the rigours of periodicity and the manner of developing thematic threads derived fromthem while the concertato character of particular movements and the generally linear texture indicate baroque connections. The first movement (Allegro) - in the form of an early classical sonata allegro - begins with a subject with energeticfigurations emblematic for the whole piece and based on a constant pendulum-like semiquaver movement anchored securely on D. It is precisely because of the nature of this subject that Bacewiczs work has been compared to the Brandenburg Concertosby Jan Sebastian Bach The second movement (Andante) while retaining its concertato charakter is at the same time an example of the composers ability to create emotionally serene lyrical moods and her sense of cantilena derived from the spiritof romantic song (a motto-subject presented at the beginning by cello solo). In this movement it is both the process of evolution and the instrumental colouring which constitute the constructional agents forming here a self-containedvalue. In thethird movement (Vivo) the composer returns to her favourite type of music understood as an expression of pure motion in the form of figural motives with infinite transformational possibilities. The spontaneity of the music the constant mutabilityof the tonal situations and the sophisticated acerbic harmonies - as Witold Lutosawski described them - form a colourful mosaic built in the structural skeleton of a sonata rondo. Concerto for String Orchestra is not only proof of thestylizing tendency of the composer but also of an unerring intuition concerning the technical and expressive possibilities inherent in a string instruments ensemble. John Tavener was that rare creature a composer of serious music and serious religious music who also achieved commercial success. He burst into the popular consciousness with theperformance of his Song for Athene at the funeral of Princess Diana but had been a highly respected and frequently-performed composer since the premiere of his dramatic cantata The Whale in 1968. The Lamb hasappeared on nearly forty different recordings.

Nymphea Reflection is a work by renowned composer Kaija Saariaho arranged for String Orchestra. Commissioned by the Schleswig Holstein Festival it was first performed on the 16th of August 2001 inElmshorn Germany by Sinfonietta Cracovia conducted by John Axelrod. Saariaho states that the starting point for Nymphea Reflection came from the idea of arranging her stringquartet Nymphea. Originally working on a straight arrangement she eventually realised that this would be very difficult and she'd need to find a new way of composing that particular piece of music. She designed a formal conceptfor each of the six sections imbuing them with very different characters.  Her simulation of electronic processing by means of orchestration is an innovative take on a new form while the effect ofthe poem by Arseniy Tarkovsky whispered by the musicians gives a haunting new perspective to both music and words.

for String Quartet op. 35a-Josef Suk played second Violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian St. Wenceslas hymn. The hymn?s message a plea for the well-being of the Czech people directed at their patron saint was immediately understood by the audience.The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914; the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914 played by the CzechPhilharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Full Score-Vivace (2010) for string orchestra began its musical life as the third movement of my Sonata for Guitar (2009) recorded by Isaac Bustos on MSR Classics [MS 1581]. While writing the sonata I began to realize what a symphonic instrument the guitar really is and how well idiomatic guitar figurations might translate to the orchestra. As the title suggests Vivace is a short lively piece tinged with spiritual uplift. Supported by a steady rhythmic ostinato in stretto the broad melody (in slow harmonic rhythm) is presented first in the highest voice and then answered in a lower one. The dovetailing of gestures and its consequent antiphonal character permeate the movement.Often the melody is presented in harmony at the interval of the 7th or 9th. As with many of my recent compositions variation color and drama are enhanced by the juxtaposition of pandiatonic passages with those that are chromatic and dissonant. --Peter Lieuwen Vivace has been recorded by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra on MSR Classics [MS 1582].
