Wieniawski H. - 2eme Polonaise Brillante Op. 21 - Violon Et Piano
Violin and Piano
PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)
2me Polonaise brillante pour violon avec acompagnement de piano op.21 Henryk Wi...
(+)
2me Polonaise brillante pour violon avec acompagnement de piano op.21 Henryk Wieniawski wrote only two polonaises. The first one, op. 4 in D minor, is one of his youthful works; the other, op. 21 in A major, is one of the last works he composed. Moreover, H. Wieniawski is the co-author of another polonaise, op. 8, for violin and piano, which he wrote with his brother Józef Wieniawski, a pianist. The latter polonaise, like the Polonaise in D minor op. 4, is also a youthful composition (1852). The polonaise as a genre, therefore, does not occupy much space in Wieniawskis heritage. Nonetheless, both polonaises, in D minor and A major, constitute an essential part of his artistic inheritance. Likewise, both polonaises had been composed in two versions: for violin and orchestra, and for violin and piano. The Polonaise in A major was completed in 1870. It is not known precisely which of the versions, the one with the piano, or the one with the orchestra first came into being. It was the version with orchestra that the composer performed for the first time on 17 March 1870, in the Grand Theatre in St. Petersburg. But merely two months later he performed the Polonaise in Warsaw, accompanied by his brother Józef at the piano. It is quite possible that Wieniawski had already performed this version of the Polonaise. It is certain, nonetheless, that both versions either appeared simultaneously, or one was composed shortly after the other. From its first public performance until the end of his concert career, Wieniawski often included this Polonaise in his concert repertoire, playing one version or another, the choice depending on the needs and circumstances. Just to mention one occasion, he played the orchestral version during a concert tour of Sweden in 1870, when he dedicated and presented a manuscript of this piece to King Charles XV of Sweden. The dedication, however, was changed in print, and both versions were eventually dedicated to François van Hal. Both versions were published simultaneously, by Schott Publishers in Mainz, with the same plate number, though the orchestral version appeared only in parts, which was a common practice in those days. The piece was most probably not published earlier than 18751. The Polonaise was praised by the critics. The reviews reported that it was a magnificent piece2, and this opinion was shared by later critical reviews, both Russian and West European. The Polonaise remained popular after the composer had died, which is evident from the number of later editions of the piece (more than ten) issued by different publishers, mostly German, and prepared by different editors. In Poland, the Polonaise was published twice after the Second World War. All the editions introduced some more or less significant changes into the text, mostly concerning performance indications, but in a sense blurring the composers intentions. All those changes were pertinent to the violin and piano version, and it was mostly in this form that the piece appeared in concert and teaching repertoires. The performances with an orchestra were much more seldom which was, among other factors, due to limited availability of the orchestral version, as it had never been published again after the first edition, until now. The Polonaise in A major was composed approximately at the same time as the Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor3. This convergence in time had influenced a certain similarity with regard to both composition and technical means, and also to the themes. In particular, the similarity becomes quite obvious in the second theme of the Allegro in the Concerto, and in the theme of the Polonaise. The Polonaise in A major is also in a certain way similar to the first Polonaise (in D minor), the motifs of the themes in both polonaises are alike. However, both pieces differ in style. The Polonaise in D minor shows the composers fascination with technical writing. Wieniawski makes the most of double-stops, chords, and all other sophisticated virtuoso techniques. The Polonaise in A major, written 18 years later, is much more mature. Although it is a virtuosic piece as well, the techniques used are somewhat more limited and subordinated to the expression. The virtuoso character of this piece is more fragile, much closer to the brillant style. At the same time, the Polonaise is typical of Wieniawskis violin playing technique. Here the composer uses the means regarded by his contemporaries to be typical of him, e.g., long staccato fragments played with one bow. The Polonaise is a concert piece in one movement extended form with a considerably abbreviated return of the first section at the end. The middle section is contrasting in character, due to the modulation to F major, change of tempo (meno mosso) and the reduction in the number of instruments (in the orchestral version). All the sections show thematic similarity. The first section, too, consists of three subsections, including a contrasting middle subsection (in E major). Zofia Chechlińska Footnotes 1. See The Critical Commentary, p. ? and onward. 2. See V. Grigoriev, Henryk Wieniawski. Życie i twórczość. [Life and Work] Warszawa - Poznań 1986, p. 184. 3. The first version of the Concerto No. 2 in D minor was completed in 1862, but in 1870, i.e., not until the Polonaise in A major was completed, Wieniawski had been working on the Concerto and implemented quite a few changes. The violin pupil can be accompanied either by the violin teacher (as a violin duet) or with piano. The optional alternative piano accompaniments are by Heidi Rolfe.'I can still remember the thrill I felt as a child of 8 when my violin teacher introduced me to my first concertino. Learning playing and eventually mastering the famous Küchler Concertino in D major made me feel privileged and grown-up as if I were joining a very special club. That was a long time ago yet for me concertinos still hold a distinctive place in the teaching repertoire. Having now taught the violin for the last thirty years and seen how happily my pupils respond to learningduets - that distinctive sense of enjoyment at playing with an adult the improvement of intonation and tone production the liveliness of the lesson - I have composed three new concertinos inspired by the duet form.Taking three great keys for the violin - G D and A minor I have endeavoured to combine emotionally engaging and technically educational music in the 'Olden Style'. Uniquely I have written a second violin part for the teacher to play alongside their pupil's part and there is also a piano accompaniment for use alternatively in concert settings.I very much hope that these concertinos prove as popular and as helpful as the series of duets in my previously published books Sounds of a Rainbow and that they ignite that sense of wonderment and purpose I experienced while playing the Kuchler all those years ago.'Nigel Goldberg

Ravel, Maurice Tzigane Concert rhapsody for violin and piano In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D?Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D?Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel?s virtuoso classic ?Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated ?Tzigane? and both versions remain a ?must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D?Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel?s masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer?s earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition; one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of ?Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D?Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D?Aranyi. D?Aranyi?s alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. The cooperation between Ravel and D?Aranyi is comparable to that of Brahms and Joachim working on the Brahms violin concerto. - First scholarly-critical Urtext edition of the work - Presented are both versions: for violin and orchestra and for violin and piano - Includes Jelly D?Aranyi?s fingering

Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix Konzert für Violine und Orchester e-Moll op. 64 erste Fassung 1844 Edition no.BA 9099-92 ISMN 9790006565733 Editor Todd, R. Larry / Brown, Clive Mendelssohn?s Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the première; the ?child prodigy? Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Léonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Léonard. The letter informs us that the composer invited Léonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Léonard. The recently discovered proofs reveal how Léonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Léonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown. It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn?s approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter?s correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Léonard?s playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. The editor, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice. - New source situation owing to recently rediscovered proofs - Revised Urtext edition - With a separate booklet on performance practice (Eng/Ger)

Three Pieces For Violin And Piano Op.11 were the first works to be written by composer Ian Venables after he moved to Worcestershire in 1986. The pieces, Pastorale, Romance and Dance have been called some of the most beautiful pieces for Violin and Piano ever composed.Brimming with melodic invention and radiant lyricism, the music of Three Pieces For Violin And Piano is both rich and varied. Pastorale begins the interplay between the Violin and the Piano with a beautifully relaxing melodic accord, with an Elgarian influence firmly on its sleeve. Romance exhibits the best kind of artistic simplicity, a musical love-letter featuring an achingly heartbreaking conversation between the two instruments, often ambiguous in its outlook. Dance concludes the Three Pieces with a rhythmically upbeat melody laden with staccato that unfolds into a lovely harmonic concordance, a fitting end to this series of dialogue between the Violin and Piano.Ian Venables' Three Pieces For Violin And Piano Op.11 is a beautifully composed work that is guaranteed to have audiences craving more of such a lovely interplay of these two instruments. / Violon Et Piano

Any violinist who hears the name Sitt nowadays will probably just think of the author of studies and exercises that have long been a familiar feature in instrumental lessons. Of course the Prague violinist, music teacher and composer Hans Sitt (1850-1922) made a significant impact on methods of violin teaching, but he also wrote a whole series of other works worth listening to: concertos for violin, viola and cello and chamber music for various combinations of instruments. Sitt studied the violin in Prague and was then appointed first as leader of the orchestra and then as musical director in Breslau (now called Wroc?aw). After posts as director of music in Prague, Chemnitz - where he championed the work of Smetana - and Nice, he was eventually appointed professor of violin, orchestral playing and score reading at the Leipzig Conservatoire from 1884-1921. Besides this he also played viola in the Brodsky Quartet, organised concerts and was conductor of the Bach Society. The composers Franco Alfano - who completed Puccini's unfinished opera Turandot- and Frederick Delius studied with Sitt, as did the conductor Václav Talich. Three Album Leaves op. 13 were also composed during his time in Leipzig, published by Bosworth and Co in 1894. Romanesca, #1 in that collection, is a pretty, slightly melancholy piece of music with romantic appeal that draws out lyrical and expressive playing and is thus eminently suitable for tuition purposes and concert performances. / Violon Et Piano

Par SARASATE PABLO DE. Sarasate\'s concert career began at age seventeen after he was awarded the coveted Premier Prix from the Paris Conservatoire for both violin and composition. After his London debut, the playwright and music critique George Bernard Shaw wrote in his review that Sarasate \'left criticism gasping miles behind him.\' Shaw also declared that there were many composers of music for the violin; there were but few composers like Sarasate for violin music. His vast concert repertory included many works written for and dedicated to him by Bruch, Saint-Saëns, Wieniawski, Dvorak and many others. He performed his own works in an inimitable, brilliant and charming manner. His contemporaries marveled at his perfect intonation and stunning rhythmic acuity. His bowing technique was the pride of the French School of violin playing. The works presented in this volume are among his finest. All are based on Spanish popular music and are a virtuosic set for violin and piano. They are and have been in virtually every great violinist\'s repertory. They are also exceptionally popular as encore pieces, as well as favorites of budding virtuosos. / Date parution : 2022-01-14/ Recueil / Violin et Piano

(+)
Born into a family that had lived in Florence since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) entertained only a distant relationship with the music he heard at synagogue: a Renaissance church held more appeal for the Florentine artist than the Oriental décor of his forefathers’ place of worship. It was only when he discovered Schelemo a rhapsody for cello and orchestra written in 1916 by Ernest Bloch that he began to understand what “Jewish music” could be. It would take until the death of his maternal grandfather and the discovery of a collection of prayers set to music among his papers for the youngCastelnuovo-Tedesco to begin to explore Jewish music. In 1928 two years after publishing the Dances of King David he wrote this Vocalise-Étude for medium voice and piano at the request of vocal teacher Amédée-Landély Hettich who wanted to include it in the Répertoire moderne de Vocalises-Études published by Leduc. The piece became so popular that it led to several adaptations and the composer asked his close friend Gioacchino Maglioni (1891-1966) to transcribe it for violin and piano. Divided into three sections the work opens with a poignant lamento that grieves the tragic fate of the Jewish people. Countering what he felt to be a tendency of Jewish music to transform into a “Wailing Wall” Castelnuovo-Tedesco follows the lamento with a folk dance whose brisk “lively and stubborn” movement has great panache. The third section returns to the initial poignant theme before briefly reiterating the dance motif allowing the piece to conclude on a hopeful note.

Mozart?s concertos for Violin and Orchestra belong to that elite group of works determining a Violin players abilities; they are elegant and transparent with demanding passage-work. The Concerto In D Major K.2 271a the ?6th? Mozart Violin concerto has come down to us in two separate sources a French set of parts and score copy as well as a Berlin score. The editorial board of the New Mozart Edition considers this concerto to be of doubtful authenticity. There are however many musicologists who feel that the work has numerous Mozart attributes. This new publication takes both the above mentioned sources into account andincludes the cadenzas from the respective New Mozart Edition volume appendix although these are certainly not from Mozart's pen.- The ?6th? Claude Debussy had difficulties finishing his last major work the Sonata for Violin and Piano. This can be seen in the many drafts which have been handed down and the fact that the cycle for which it was conceived was left unfinished. The work originated under the impact of Debussy’s progressing illness as well as the First World War.The first edition published during the final year of Debussy’s life contains many rhythmic errors. The non-autograph metronome marks as well as the discrepancies between the separate violin part and the violin part in small print in the piano score are two problems that have affected the work’s later reception. Both are examined here in a fresh light. In addition to the Sonata this edition contains arrangements of La fille aux cheveux de lin and Il pleure dans mon coeur by the American violinist Arthur Hartmann. It was Hartmann who inspired Debussy to make an arrangement of his well-known piano piece Minstrels also included in our edition.- Debussy’s complete works for violin and piano- With arrangements by Debussy’s acquaintance Hartmann- Informative Foreword (Eng/Fr/Ger)- Critical Commentary (Eng)

Grade 3-4-A series available as violin duets or violin & piano.Whether a student or a great artist the desire to make a beautiful sound is a constant in the life of any musician. Sound is the musician's voice the means of communicating an artistic vision to the audience and it should be the aim for children of any age or standard to be engaged in good tone production. The inspiration for writing these pieces came to me from the wish to give the young children I teach music which would develop their ear for both good intonation and beautiful tone production. All the pieces have a strongly implied harmonic structure allowing them to be played without accompaniment. Thepurpose of the second violin part is therefore to enable the teacher to underline the harmony as well as to influence the student's tone production and intonation through his own sound as much can be taught by good example. This music is also available for violin and piano with piano accompaniments written by Heidi Rolfe. Finally I think that children enjoy the challenge of expressing different moods and emotions musically and I hope that the range of ideas implied by the keys and the titles of these pieces will fire their imagination.Nigel Goldberg.

Bach, Johann Sebastian Concerto for Violin, Strings and Basso Continuo G minor Reconstructed from BWV 1056 - Reconstructed from the Urtext of the ?New Bach Edition? - Meticulous analysis and evaluation of the sources - Interpretative leeway for keyboard players This violin concerto in G minor has not come down to us in the form presented here. It has been reconstructed from a lost violin concerto that survives solely in Bach?s arrangement for harpsichord, namely, as the Harpsichord Concerto in F minor (BWV 1056). The reconstruction is based on a meticulous evaluation of those autograph harpsichord concertos that also survive in an original version for violin. In particular, the autograph harpsichord parts contain changes that Bach made when preparing his arrangements, thereby revealing the manner in which he transcribed his solo violin works for the harpsichord. The keyboard realization is presented in a transparent way allowing players the possibility to embellish and fill in the harmonies at their discretion.

Serenata Notturna by Edward Gregson was first performed by Helena Smart (violin) and Caroline Jaya-Ratnam (piano) at the String Final of BBC Young Musicians 2000 Royal Northem College of Music Manchester 23 February 2000.'As the title suggests my Serenata Notturna evokes the atmosphere of night music. Following a reflective opening where the pitch development outlines a twelve-note series the music gradually becomes more agitated developing into a kind of danse macabre eventually reaching a powerful climax. The music then subsides into a much more tranquil atmosphere and the previous dissonant material transposes itself into a simple melody(like a lullaby) uttered by the violin the outline of which both melodically and in terms of the accompaniment figuration has already been present in the piece since the beginning. Thus the turmoil of the first part of the work becomes transfigured into something much more peaceful - hence the quotation that prefaces the score: ?out of darkness cometh light?. After I finished the work it became apparent to me that it might become the sketch for the slow movement of a Violin Concerto on which I had just begun working. It did indeed form the basis of that slow movement and the concerto was premiered by Lyn Fletcher and the Halle Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano at Bridgewater Hall Manchester in February 2000 the same month as Serenata Notturna itself was first played in public.'Edward Gregson

for Violin Viola and Orchestra-There is no reference to the origin occasion or a performance of the Sinfonia concertante in E-flat for Violin Viola and Orchestra K. 364 (320d) because in all probability it was composed in Salzburg (presumably in summer or early autumn 1779): Mozart seems to have had no reason to write about it. It was apparently in Paris that he first had the occasion of giving the genre of the ?Symphonie concertante? his special attention. On April 5 1778 he wrote to his father: ?Now I shall write a sinfonie concertante for flute wendling oboe Ramm Punto horn and Ritter bassoon?.Even more discouraging must have been the fact that he had similardifficulties in Paris in having the works performed as he had in Mannheim. After the organizier of the Concerts spirituels Le Gros contrary to his promise did not include the mentioned ?sinfonie concertante? in his program.Mozart had no reason to compose any more for this genre in Paris. After Mozart?s return to Salzburg he might have been eager to introduce the new genre there especially since adequate instrumentalists were available. Also the choice of the solo instruments (violin and viola) in the work presented here was probably influenced by the popularity of this instrumental combination in Salzburg at that time.- Urtext of the New Mozart Edition- Full score

revised edition of HN 293-Whilst some late works by César Franck have received criticism the Sonata For Piano and Violin In A Major of 1886 found a friendly reception among critics and public from the outset. This work isdedicated to Eugène Ysaÿe who was attracting much attention at the time with his flawless Violin technique. Ysaÿe was so inspired by the Sonata that he promised 'I will play this masterpiece wherever I can find anartistically-minded pianist'.Nothing has changed to the present day regarding the work's continuing popularity but it was time to revise Henle's previous edition to reflect the latest research. In the intervening period ithas been shown that Franck was actively involved in reading the proofs for the printed edition meaning that the first edition which contains many differences from the autograph has become the basis for this new one.The markings of the Violin part of Henle's edition are by Yehudi Menuhin; Daniel Hope has undertaken the changes required by the revised musical text.
