The Romance Anonimo (Anonymous Romance) is a simple familiar and well-loved work that is in one version or another in the repertoire of virtually every classical Guitarist. As with many seemingly simple works a good level of technical ability and musicianship is required to create a performance worthy of the music.The piece is known by many names Spanish Romance Romance de Espana Romance of the Guitar and Study in E by Rubira. Similarly the authorship is unsettled though Miguel Llobet is one of the names to which the piece is credited. The earliest known recording was a wax cylinder made sometime around 1900. Whoever wrote Romance Anonimo it is a lovely piece beloved of audiences and Guitarists alike.

Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise therefore that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the Flute's repertoire Romance being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra he was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed including his Romance which premiered in 1905. Addressing many technical features including flourishing semiquaver passages a widerange emotion intervals chromaticism and complex rhythms Romance for Flute and Piano is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists.

Lise Christiani? thus described in the surviving autograph was only published as op. 109 from the composer?s estate in 1868. The French cellist Lise Christiani gave several concerts inLeipzig in October 1845 where she met with Mendelssohn and presumably commissioned him to write this charming work. It is the only ?Song without words? that Mendelssohn wrote for two instruments not piano solo. It was previouslyonly available as part of a collection of works for this instrumentation (HN 669). However the ?Romance sans paroles? a favourite with cellists is now also available as a single Henle Urtext edition.

The form of the piece is relatively simple, opening with a lyrical melody over a repetitive and somewhat rhythmic accompaniment. The middle section modulates to the key of the flattened 6th scale degree (B-flat major), using this to arrive at the dominant chord, in which there are some pseudo cadenza-like moments. Following this, a return to the opening melody with a slightly modified accompaniment, and subsequently a brief coda. To better accommodate the bass clarinet, the entire piece has been transposed up a half-step from the original version into a morecomfortable key of E-flat major. Additionally, for much of the piece, the solo part has been lowered by an octave, as to make the piece generally more accessible to students. Should there be a desire to hear the piece more in the range of the original version, one could simply play it on a standard B-flat clarinet to achieve this effect. Though only about four minutes in length, this relatively short vignette captures much of the true essence of Saint-Saëns, not only through the harmonic progressions and accompanimental figures used, but also demonstrating his gift of turning a 'simple' melody into something extraordinary. The Romance for a melodic instrument and Piano was a very popular genre in French salon music of the nineteenth century. Saint-Saëns also wrote several such pieces for Violin Cello and Horn. His only Romance for Flute was composed in 1871 shortly after the Société nationale de musique had been founded. It was premiered in this new forum for Piano music and chamber works a year later too. In spite of its brevity the piece contains numerous harmonic and melodic refinements which rapidly made it popular among flautists both in the original setting with Piano accompaniment as well as in the later orchestral version. The Henle Urtext edition is the firstcritical edition of this piece which is also very popular with learners of the Flute.

'Romance for violin and piano is a short reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece the ending is somewhat incomplete. She graduated from the BMus course with First Class Honours and completed her Masters with Distinction in 2004. From 2005-07 Helenwas a Legal & General Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music. In 2003 she won a British Composer Award for her Oboe Concerto and was awarded the intercollegiate Theodore Holland Composition Prize in 2003 as well as allthe major composition prizes in the RCM.
