Pour Alto Saxophone et Piano-Born to an Italian father and a French mother Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) divided his music studies between the Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Conservatoire de Paris where he was taught by Henri Büsser and Henri Rabaud. His chamber music compositions reveal a marked predilection for wind instruments as reflected in Fantaisie pastorale for oboe and piano (1939) and New-Orléans for bass saxhorn and piano (1944). During his stay a few years earlier at the Villa Medici in Rome (1936) Bozza had written his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano – a free adaptation of the third movement of JohannSebastian Bach’s Organ Pastorale in F major BWV 590. This expansive and nostalgic melody which unfolds over a regular meter has become one of the most widely played Saxo­phone pieces in the world. Having enjoyed such success Éditions Leduc has decided to supplement its republication with an audio version that will enable saxo­phonists to carry out “full-scale” practice.

Concertino Da Camera written in 1935 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) was a small concerto for alto-saxophone and eleven instruments: Flute Bassoon Oboe Horn Trumpet and Strings. This score is for Alto Saxophone and Piano. This Concertino is in two movements Allegro con moto and Larghetto – Animato Molto is dedicated to the saxophonist Sigurd Rascher and is standing out for its large use of the Alto-Saxophone. It can be technically challenging and has a strong lyrical part. Its author Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed manysymphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including Angelique (1926) and Divertissement (1930). He was also in charge of the Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera. This concerto has some similarities with his Flute Concerto (1934) also published by Alphonse Leduc.

Piano Reduction including solo part. Par DENISOV EDISON. The catalogue of Edison Denisov's works includes 16 concertos. It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996. In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from the composer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with sonic effects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses. Clémence de Grandval (1828-1907) est l'une des rares femmes dont les compositions furent données régulièrement en création, lors de la seconde moitié du XIXo siècle.Tout d'abord élève de Flotow, elle se perfectionna auprès de C. Saint-Saëns, qui lui prodigua de nombreux encouragements à persévérer dans cette voie, en dépit des préjugés sexistes de ses pairs.On lui doit de nombreuses oeuvres, touchant tous les genres : musique instrumentale, musique de chambre, musique symphonique, musique religieuse, opéra? Au concert, l'ensemble de sa production fut toujours très bien accueillie, tant par le grand public que par la critique.En 1878, elle signa un concerto pour hautbois à l'intention de Georges Gillet, professeur au Conservatoire. Ce même artiste est le dédicataire d'une suite de ' 4 morceaux ' pour cor anglais et piano, parus en 1865 (seuls deux morceaux ont été édités, sur les quatre prévus initialement). La présente restitution propose ces deux pièces dans une version pour saxophone alto, instrument dont le registre est rigoureusement identique à celui du cor anglais, ce dernier étant très rarement usité en musique instrumentale. / Saxophone Et Piano Ou Orgue

La partie solo présente une étendue relativement limitée d’une octave et demie. C’est pourquoi Game Over est une pièce particulièrement adaptée aux jeunes élèves, à jouer en audition ou comme répertoire d’examen. Canzonetta Op. 19 is a piece for Alto Saxophone and Piano accompaniment composed by Gabriel Pierné and arranged by Marcel Mule. Initially written for Clarinet and Piano the piece was written in 1888 and can be played by advanced players with a fairly high difficulty level. Composed in a single movement the piece features some different sections linked together. It starts with dotted rhythms that are slightly reminiscent of a siciliano and is followed by a part that sounds like a Scherzando. The dotted rhythms disappear in the Piu Vivo section but the opening theme soon comes back before a grandiose finale.Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a French composer conductor and Organ player. He won the French Prix de Rome 1882.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Petite Gavotte for Alto Saxophone with Piano accompaniment is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes while remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1964 Bozza's PetiteGavotte addresses a variety of features of the Alto Saxophone suitable for intermediate saxophonists. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'
