From Scotland-Ireland-This is the second popular book of beautiful Celtic tunes compiled and arranged for the cello by Abby Newton. Most of the tunes in this collection are from her recent recordings Castles Kirks and Caves and Ferintosh. The book is organized in three parts: Tunes Sets and Duos. The first part Tunes contains an assortment of twenty-eight tunes culled mostly from the well know Scottish and Irish traditional tune books including collections by Capt.Simon Fraser Patrick McDonald Niel Gow and James Oswald. The second part Sets consists of several tunes played in succession. Cheryl Frances-Hoad's Excelsus for solo Cello. 'Excelsus takes the form of a suite each movement being based on a passage from the Requiem mass text. Although I spent many hours refining my interpretation of the words the work is ultimately a more instinctive reaction to the evocative language of the excerpts. However my stance was always totally atheistic and this infiltrates everything from the mood through the disregard for the text’s order to the instrumentation (the use of a lone figure which I viewed as a musical equivalent to the ‘first person’ offending against the liturgical norms which areconcerned with people as a community). Musically the entire work is based on two themes one melodic (the Rex Tremendae or ‘King of Awful Majesty’ theme which is heard at the very opening) and one chordal (the Lux Aeternum (Light eternal) chords not revealed in their pure form until the pizzicato passage that concludes the suite). A Song without Words for Violoncello Solo-Manfred Trojahn on the origin and title of his impressive virtuoso solo work:'Admittedly I do not know if he had seagulls but since Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg he will not have gone through life without at least the impression of the cry of seagulls. Nor do I know if seagulls played any part in his life in Rome. I myself was astonished when one or two years ago in the Villa Massimo I was not exactly annoyed but disturbed by the strong rhythmical cry of seagulls. I was just about to write a bassoon solo when the seagulls started. Then the idea came to me that precisely this sequence of notes could serve as the basis of the work. And the sequence for thebassoon solo is in turn the basis of the piece for violoncello - this is how titles are born... Of course the violoncello meanders with virtuosic ease from the seagull motif to the 'elf-like' skittering brought to music by Mendelssohn and used time and again in his compositions finally becoming a cabaletta. Now cabalettas are not very representative of Mendelssohn but as I was composing I definitely wanted to put a cabaletta in this passage. I am sure Mendelssohn and I will easily agree on this especially since later justice is done to him in the rapid passages and of course in the tonal cadenza at the very end which is more indicative of his time than of mine ... isn't it?'

Ayant joué du violon dans mon enfance, j'ai toujours repoussé le moment d'écrire pour les cordes seules, comme si la peur d'aborder mon instrument reprenait corps lors du passage à l'écriture. Mais l'amitié fait des miracles et Alexis Descharmes n'a eu aucun mal à me convaincre d'écrire pour le violoncelle. Il faut dire que notre collaboration au sein de Court-circuit n'a fait qu'aiguiser mon envie de me confronter à son instrument. Après une série de Loops, pièces solistes pour flûte(s) et percussion organisées autour de l'idée de bouclage, de morphing et de labyrinthe formel, cette nouvelle pièce pour instrument seul emprunte des voies totalement différentes, voire volontairement contradictoires. En effet, ici pas de processus linéaires de transformation, pas de répétition littérale ni de bouclage, pas de brouillage des pistes, pas de refus des modes de jeux ni des gestes instrumentaux. Au contraire, la pièce est construite à partir de quelques éléments 'énergétiques' particulièrement violoncellistiques et liés au caractère impétueux de son dédicataire qui s'enchaînent, se catapultent et se transforment de façon non prévisible. Par ailleurs, comme son titre le laisse supposer, D'un trait a été composé dans un laps de temps restreint et concentré et il y a une sorte 'd'animalité' qui s'en dégage, une forme d'urgence et de tension que l'on retrouve dans les autres pièces que j'ai écrites dernièrement, malgré l'intervention de l'ordinateur dans le calcul de bon nombre de paramètres.
