Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. Da Roma témoigne des recherches que je menais en 2004 sur la notion de processus. Ecrite à la Villa Médicis, cette pièce fait suite au Cycle des gris pour orchestre sur instruments anciens ou encore aux Fées pour quatuor à cordes, oeuvres dans lesquelles j'ai tenté de construire un discours plus continu, moins fondé sur la rupture qu'auparavant. Si j'ai privilégié dans mon travail la confrontation entre des idées musicales antagonistes, je tente depuis peu d'introduire dans mon langage, toujours fondé sur l'énergie, l'idée de la transformation progressive d'éléments musicaux. C'est de la déformation progressive de la matière que naît le discours.
Le premier élément de l'oeuvre est un ostinato très lent du piano, un accord consonant répété et varié, sonnant comme un glas sur lequel les autres instruments agissent comme des ornementateurs. Les échappées mélodiques de la clarinette ou de l'alto occupent alors le premier plan, jusqu'à donner naissance à une idée plus instable qui supplante l'ostinato initial. Cette idée oppose un accord dans le registre grave et des arpèges descendants qui, bien que de plus en plus fréquents, laisseront la place à la répétition de l'accord qui leur est opposé, dans des transpositions progressives dans l'aigu. Pour rompre la périodicité de cet accord, une vague descendante fait son apparition, et à son tour, vient voler la vedette à l'idée précédente. Cette vague répétée est raréfiée progressivement, jusqu'à donner naissance à une pulsation régulière, contrariée par une pulsation plus rapide qui s'impose, elle-même contrariée par une pulsation plus rapide... Afin de sortir de cette logique de jeu de cache-cache entre les idées musicales, la section suivante s'impose par la rupture, et réintroduit l'harmonie du glas initial. La clarinette, dans un solo déchiré et disjoint, puis l'alto seul, réintroduisant un ostinato, prennent la parole pour conclure la pièce dans le recueillement.
Da Roma, commande des éditions EMC, est avant tout un hommage à trois musiciens, tous membres de l'Ensemble intercontemporain, qui m'accompagnent régulièrement depuis quelques années, et qui ont fondé le trio Modulations : Odile Auboin, Hidéki Nagano, et Alain Billard.

Comme le titre l'indique, ce travail traite des Etats d'esprit après que la tombée de la nuit, cette proportion de nos vies si souvent associée à la vulnérabilité, craint et insécurités. Le trio s'ouvre avec une paire feutrée de cadences pour clarinette basse et alto, introduisant le principal motivique et matériel harmonique. Le mouvement de la variation central agit comme un ensemble de séquences de rêve, ou plus correctement différentes versions d'un même rêve, tous étant liée à la chorale avec laquelle cette section s'ouvre. Elles progressent de sérénité, à travers des passages de l'augmentation de la nervosité et tension, à une élégie qui pousse plus loin dans l'énergie et de passion. Based on Robert Schumann. Neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke, Band II/3. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. The Fairy-Tale Narratives (Märchenerzählungen) for B-flat Clarinet (ad libitum Violin), Viola and Piano, Op. 132, belong to the few Schumann works that were composed, revised and published in a short time: composed in Düsseldorf, at beginning of October 1853, the new composition was already offered for publication to the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house on 3 November and printed in February 1854.
Composition and publication of the Märchenerzählungen were accompanied, though, by difficult times, the final days before the composer was admitted to the psychiatric clinic in Endenich. The work’s reception lies in the shadow of the last creative period: The pieces were associated with his life’s darker phases and were very little played.
The Märchenerzählungen transmit Schumann’s single work for this unusual piano trio with viola and clarinet. The only well-known earlier example in this setting at that time is Mozart’s “Kegelstatt” Trio K 498 (composed in 1786).
