Par GAUBERT. Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the instrument's repertoire, Ballade being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opera, he was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his famous Ballade which premiered in 1927. Son of a military bandleader Xavier Leroux (1863-1919) was a French composer who studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Jules Massenet and Théodore Dubois. Although primarily known for his Operas Leroux's Deux Romances for Flute and Piano remain prominent in the instrument's repertoire. Dedicated to Philippe Gaubert the first Romance is composed in A minor. Characteristics are typical of the French romantic era such as semiquaver flourishes use of the sultry lower register of the Flute variations in articulation much use of performance directions and chromaticisms among otheraspects. For all aspiring advanced flautists Leroux's Deux Romances make for a sublime addition to the repertoire.

From Fancies Pour Piano-This Sérénade is the first of 7 pieces collectively called 'Fancies' originally written for piano in 1915.Gabriel Marie Grovlez (1879-1944) was born in Lille Northern France in 1879 and died in war-torn Paris in 1944. From among his teachers who include Gédalge and Lavignac Fauré must surely rank as his strongest influence and this is readily heard in his small but significant oeuvre of solo piano pieces as well as his music for stage and chamber ensembles. Interestingly most of the piano music was published over a period of around a dozen years (1907-1919) and in the lull between these works and his Impressions (two pieces) of 1934 Grovlez wascompositionally preoccupied with songs and chamber pieces many of which languish patiently on the shelf awaiting a wholehearted appraisal. There is as well as his notable penchant for elegance and poetical lyricism a considerable wit to enjoy too (take Les nes The Donkeys from L'Almanach aux images for example) and indeed the fact that Grovlez's middle years were spent fulfilling the duties of assistant conductor and choir leader of the Opéra-Comique seems especially revealing of the man's musical personality and capacity for successfully intertwining serious and less serious genres.Grovlez was quite a cosmopolitan character; besides making a notable mark in his native country (he was latterly a professor of chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire) he travelled to the United States and Africa as well as across Europe. Although we tend to remember Grovlez today for his influence primarily as a composer in the mould of Fauré or Debussy bringing a quirky quality to some of his writing more than occasionally reminiscent of Poulenc it was as a conductor that Grovlez initially made an impact. Moreover we should not overlook the fact that he gave the inaugural performances of some highly treasured works by the likes of Ravel (Ma Mère l'Oye) and Fauré (Dolly Suite) a piano duet which has earned an especially important

The melodies from George Gershwin's (1898-1937) musicals from 'Porgy and Bess' from orchestral pieces like 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'An American in Paris' we all know them! But the career of the young musician started as a pianist in a music publishing house where he was to encourage customers to buy music by playing it. Soon he began to compose music himself and caught the attention of the Broadway which paved the way to his international career. Inspired by Frédéric Chopin's 24 Préludes he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the otherthree at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast slow fast). Thanks to the present arrangement the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.
