Cyril Scott was an English composer writer and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works which include two mature symphonies three operas three Piano concertos concertos for Violin Cello Oboe and Harpsichord several overtures four oratorios as well as a mass of chamber music.While less appreciated during his lifetime it is Scott’s late works(written between 1950 and his death) that are the most individual with their ever-shifting harmoniccolours and wayward inflections of phrase and mood capturing perfectly the way the mind shifts backwards and forwards between reminiscence regrets and self-assertion.Composed in 1961 for Flute and Piano and premiered by William Bennett and Margaret Norman on November 9 of that year Sonata For Flute is perfect  example of the genius of Scott’s late works.

Suite op. 34 for Flute and Piano-The name Widor is so closely associated with music for the Organ that his many compositions for other instruments can easily be overlooked. The Suite for Flute and Piano presumably composed in1877 stands out amongst chamber music works on account of the wealth of expressive and tonal nuances.The late Romantic work is specially tailored to the possibilities of the Flute; and it is no accident that it wasdedicated to the most important French flautist and flute teacher of the time Paul Taffanel who gave its first performance in 1884. From the very beginning the four-movement Suite has been very popular and now belongs to thecore repertoire for Flute and Piano.

Aztec Dances was commissioned by Christopher Orton with the assistance of the BBC Performing Arts Fund. The first performance was given by Christopher Orton (recorder) and Magdalena Nasidlak (piano) at a concert in the Manchester Midday Concerts series at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in March 2010.The version for flute and piano was premiered by Wissam Boustany (Flute) and Aleksander Szram (Piano) at St James?s Church Piccadilly on Thursday 19 May 2011.1. Sacrificial Dance Composer's Note The idea for the genesis of thiswork and indeed its title and individual movements came after visiting an exhibition at the British Museum entitled Moctezuma ?Aztec Ruler. The exhibition traced the events following the election in 1502 of Moctezuma as Supreme Ruler of the Aztecs and the subsequent invasion of 1519 by a Spanish expedition led by Hermán Cortés ? an event that was to eventually lead to the demise of the Aztec civilisation.Part of the exhibition explored the role that music and dance played in Aztec life. The primitive recorder together with trumpets and drums were used as an important part of the formal ritual ceremonies (including rather gruesomely human sacrifice) that took place to appease the many Gods which the Aztecs worshipped as well as for other more informal occasions in their social and cultural life.I have tried to reflect some of these highly contrasting and dramatic ideas in this four movement work.        Edward Gregson

As follows: Pan a shepherd-god known for playing the pan-pipes. Tityre was one of the shepherds in Virgil's Bucolica. Krishna is the Hindu god. In his youth Krishna played the flute. M.de la Pejaudie is the hero of the novel La Pecheresse by Henri de Regnier.

Contemporary Japanese composer Yuko Uebayashi moved to Paris in 1998. Uebayashi's works have been met with much success in both Japan and France Sonata for Flute and Piano being no exception. Flautist Jean Ferrandis described Uebayashi's works as 'gems that although they are so different they yet belong to the same world a world of vivacity dreams tenderness humour and one that is subtly contradicted by vehemence virtuosity melancholy and sorrow.' Sonata for Flute and Piano is made up of four movements with a typical performance lasting around 26 minutes. Sonata for Flute andPiano is modern in style exploiting tonality rhythm and the ensemble making this a sublime addition to the advanced repertoire of the instrument.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto in G was written by the composer in 1778. The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on the Flute making it one of the most important Concerti in the instrument's repertoire. Concerto in G is in three movements; 1. Allegro maestoso 2. Adagio ma non troppo and 3. Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of D major. A Dutch flautist of the time Ferdinand de Jean commissioned Mozart for four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However thecomposer who famously disliked the Flute only completed three quartets and two concertos. Instead of composing a second concerto Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. This edition of Mozart's Concerto in G includes cadences by virtuosos Taffanel Gaubert and Bozza making for an unmissable version of the famed work.

(11 Pieces for Flutists Of All Ages) for Flute and Piano-In February of 2006 Schocker was featured in Flute Talk which was no surprise given his popularity among the Flute-playing public. The cover photo the four-page spread and the inclusion of the third movement ?Sarabande ? all pointed to his collection of short pieces Dances and Daydreams.?Short easy movements with a wide range of expressions and styles? says Schocker. A sure-fire Schocker hit it is a perfect addition to a flutist?s repertoire along with Schocker?s Airborne and Green Places.

Created in 1943 as part of the four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire this charming Sonatine for Flute and Piano is part of the early works of Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) a French Composer following the paths of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. Even though the composer was later quite critical about it this Sonatine which lasts 9 minutes is the most recorded of his compositions and has become a standard in the flute repertoire. Composed of three movements it begins with a tempo “Allegretto” followed by a part more “Andante” and finishes with a cadence “Animé”. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers among many others. His work also includes sonatas for piano and for oboe two symphonies the cello concerto Tout un monde lointain (A whole distant world) the violin concerto L'arbre des songes (The tree of dreams) and the string quartet Ainsi la nuit (Thus the night).

for Flute and Harpsichord obbligato (Piano)-The B Minor Suite has a special place among the four extant Orchestral suites by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 1066-1069) for two reasons: it is the only suite that calls for only one wind instrument and the only one with extensive solo passages for one instrument. Since moreover it is essentially Bach's only composition for solo Flute with Orchestra it enjoys great favour among flutists.A proper string ensemble is not always at one's disposal. Therefore an arrangement {or Flute and Obbligato Harpsichord has been prepared similar to one Bach himself might have written. The aim here has been to do nothing thatBach himself would not have done yet to refrain from doing everything of which he was capable.

Hungarian composer László Lajtha first studied at the Academy of Music in Budapest before moving to Paris to study with Vincent d'Indy. Initially in collaboration with Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály Lajtha studied the transcription of the Hungarian folk song. He soon began composing other significant work including Sonate En Concert for Flute and Piano often incorporating Hungarian influences. Lajtha's composition catalogue comprises mainly of orchestral works however Sonate En Concert for Flute and Piano is made up of four movements; 1)Entrance with Two Cadences 2) Nostalgic Berceuse 3) Melancholic Menuet and 4) Gay Finale. The work is highly virtuosic addressing advanced features such as variations in articulation complex rhythms exploitation of the ensemble chromaticism and uses of extended techniques including flutter tonguing. For all advanced flautists Lajtha's Sonate En Concert is an exciting addition to the repertoire.

In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. Celtic music is in his blood for his ancestors were noted collectors of dance music manuscripts dating back to the 19th century. With many recordings to his credit he now offers his expertise to performers wishing to explore the rich culture of Irish and other Celtic music on a variety of instruments. ?World Music Celtic? presents material from the Irish Scottish Welsh Cornish and Breton traditions. It makes no great technical demands on the players but Tourish points out that notation of this music is often ?skeletal? hence it is important to gain a knowledge of theindividual traditions in question and naturally he offers plenty of information on performance practice. The collection spans three centuries from the blind bardic harpists of the 18th century to the international performers of the present day.
