For Children Vol. 2. Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Children between 1908 and 1911. The first edition was issued between 1909 and 1911 in four volumes, comprising two of Hungarian and two of Slovak folk song arrangements. After moving to America, Bartók considered it important to produce new editions of his earlier works. Thus in autumn 1943, together with his new publisher Boosey

(+)

(+)
In a note for the planned first edition of his Hungarian Peasant Songs in 1914 Bartók wrote that ?the melodies published here are folksongs in the truest sense of the word; more precisely peasant songs?. Bartók initiallywithdrew this work from publication however and added new pieces to it using folk music he had collected in the meantime. The first edition was only finally published in 1920. The Bartók scholar László Somfai explains the work?scomplicated genesis in his preface. The comments at the close of this edition include important indications regarding performance practice derived from the two recordings that the composer made of several of its pieces in 1927 and1936. The musical text here follows that of the corresponding volume of the Bartók Complete Edition that is currently in preparation. This is yet another highly popular Bartók work on offer from G. Henle Publishers!

(+)
Béla Bartók's Sonatina for solo Piano. Suitable for pianists at an intermediate level. In his Sonatina Bartók used different melodies taken fromRomanian instrumental folk. From examining the sources it is clear to see how in 1915 the piece slowly evolved out of a series of Piano transcriptions of Romanian folk melodies into its three-movement form. This HenleUrtext Edition has been released prior to its publication as part of the Complete Edition. In this edition Bartók specialist László Somfai outlines the work’s exciting genesis and expounds onBartók’s later revision during which he not only changed the tempi but also the fingerings. The insightful notes on the work's background are complemented by indications on how to play the verycomplex Piano notation by Bartók himself and from his recordings. This edition provides an invitation to pianists to rediscover this Sonatina.

(+)
Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition Volume 38. Par BARTOK BELA. The third volume in the Complete Edition contains Bartók's works for piano solo composed between 1914 and 1920. Bartók's pianistic oeuvre from the years of World War I span a broadly varied spectrum; in addition to simple arrangements of folk music (15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, Sonatina) and original pieces for the concert podium (Suite, op. 14), we find Bartók's audaciously innovative Etudes (op. 18) inspired by Liszt, as well as Improvisations (op. 20), perhaps his most abstract and original folk music adaptations. The appendix of the volume reproduces movements originally intended for, but eventually discarded from, Suite and 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, as well as all original sources for the folk-inspired pieces. The introductory essays in English, Hungarian, and German not only explore the genesis and reception of the works more thoroughly than ever before, but also orient the reader in issues of notation and performance. The critical commentary presents all manuscript and print sources of the works in detail (including folk music sources), it documents the compositional processes and surveys the range of textual variants and problems. / Somfai, László / Répertoire / Piano

This is a new edition of Béla Bartók?s popular Romanian Folk Dances in its original scoring for Solo Piano. With fascinating background notes and unique imagery this publication is essential for pianistsinterested in the work of the Hungarian composer. When Bartók?was just 23 years old he visited the Transylvanian town of?Gerlicepuszta. Overhearing a lullaby sung by a teenage servant girl named LidiDósa he quizzed her about it and noted it down. This was the beginning of a passion for folk music that would go on to change the course of the composer's life and work. Romanian FolkDances?remains one of Bartók's most popular and enduring works evoking the folk melodies combined with his own idiosyncratic harmonies and textures. Each of the six short pieces here is based on atraditional melody which Bartók?penned during his travels.? Including newly engraved masterpieces?Stick Dance Waistband Dance In One Spot Dance From Butschum Romanian Polkaand Fast Dance this sheet music collection features editorial revisions guided by recordings of Bartók's own performance. The notation also includes fingering guidancethroughout. One of the most important 20th century composers and along with Liszt one of Hungary's finest musical minds Bartók?held a strong fascination for folkmusic. (+)

The editor has selected seventeen of the the forty-two pieces in the 1909 version of Béla Bartók?s seminal work, For Children, Volume One. These selections were chosen as a result of the editor?s teaching experiences with this music: pieces that are both pedagogically advantageous for the teacher, and the most enjoyed by students. Although Bartók?s intention was to write a set of pieces for young people, the charm and depth of these masterful works makes them equally appealing to students of all ages and levels. For Children has been played in concert and recorded by great pianists such as György Sándor, Zoltán Kocsis, Géza Anda, Menahem Pressler, and June de Toth. There is also a recording available on YouTube of Béla Bartók himself playing a selection of pieces from For Children in a 1945 radio broadcast. / Date parution : 2022-11-08/ Recueil / Piano

(+)
Béla Bartók's series of piano pieces For Children, based on folk melodies, was written around the end of the first decade of the 20th century. The pieces were published shortly afterwards by the Hungarian publisher Károly Rozsnyai. That first publication was in four volumes, the first two containing a total of 42 pieces based on Hungarian folk tunes, the third and fourth containing 43 pieces based on Slovakian folk tunes. In 1943, whilst in the United States, Bartók prepared a revised version of the collection for the publishers Boosey and Hawkes. The revisions were minimal: two Hungarian and four Slovakian songs were eliminated, there were a few minor alterations incorporating new ideas, some of the pieces previously written with accidentals had key signatures added, a few pieces were rewritten with changed meters - some fingerings were added or changed. The composer prepared the revised 1943 edition by using copies of the first edition on which he marked minor changes - where the changes were more extensive, fresh manuscript was written and a new version engraved. However, much of the engraving of the first edition was preserved in the 1943 edition. Publication took place in 1946, after the composer's death - it is not known if he saw final proofs prior to printing. The revised edition was published in two volumes, which now have been published together as one volume for the first time. / Piano

(+)
Bartók wrote the first dance around the time of the Romanian movements of the 'Seven Sketches' after his first trip collecting Romanian folk music in July-August 1909. The second dance is the fruit of March the following year and it was only after some time he decided they should be published as a pair. From the beginning audiences were impressed by the first dance in the composer's peculiar performance with its initial drumming and its driving rhythms. If less popular compositionally the second dance is more original. He parades and varies his material in a chain form and this too is reminiscent of the dances heard in the playing of Romanian Transylvanian villagemusicians which in his scholarly work Bartók called 'motive dances.' (+)
The 'Romanian Folk Dances' undoubtedly rank amongst Bartók's most popular compositions. The earliest version is scored for piano (1915) and was published by Universal Edition in 1918. ln the preparation of this revised edition the last previous printed edition was compared with the available manuscript sources which include editions marked by Béla Bartók with corrections. His corrected copies of the violin-piano transcription (prepared by Zoltán Székely) as well as the orchestra arrangement were also considered. The major correction concerns metronome numbers. At various times since the work's first publicationthe composer slightly revised some of these tempi. ln the composer's lifetime the last printed editions of both violin-piano and piano versions produced during World War II bear corrections in his file copies the two being in agreement with each other as well as with the marked duration of each dance. The tempi found in these printed editions believed to be the composer's last word on the subject appear in this revised edition.' (Peter Bartók)

(+)
Urtext (1932-1939). Bartók's Mikrokosmos has been one of the milestones in pedagogical piano repertoire for 80 years - and yet it is also far more than a "classical" piano primer. These 153 piano pieces, organized in ascending order of difficulty, engage not only with technical aspects of piano playing but also with the fundamentals of composition - from "Imitation and Inversion," "Ostinato," and "Free Variations," concerning compositional technique, to mood pieces and pieces with programmatic ideas such as "Notturno," "Boating," "From the Diary of a Fly," or the famous "Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm." Mikrokosmos first appeared in 1940 in six volumes. Based on volume 40 of the Bartók Complete Edition published in 2020(Z. 15040), the present Urtext edition offers the series gathered in three volumes. This edition includes Bartók's preface, exercises, and notes written for the first edition. Furthermore, it also features a preface and comments by the editor, which not only discuss the genesis and the compositional sources but also provide performers, teachers and pupils alike, with authentic and detailed information about Bartók's notation and the specific performing problems of Mikrokosmos.

(+)
One of Béla Bartók's best-known and most popular works for Piano the Allegro Barbaro was composed in 1910-11. Bartók himself enjoyed performing the piece in concerts and recorded it severaltimes. A recording from 1929 referred to by Bartók as the ?authentic recording? contains very interesting departures from the printed version as far as tempo articulation and even the number of ostinatomeasures are concerned. These elements have been included in the musical text for the first time in this Henle Urtext edition and are clearly annotated. With this first Bartók Urtext edition editor László Somfai offers aninsight into the many and varied musical impulses that will be demonstrated in the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition which will be jointly published by Editio Musica Budapest and G. Henle from 2016.

The great Hungarian composer's complete six-volume collection represents one of the most comprehensive anthologies of contemporary technique ever assembled. This edition consisting of the first two volumes presents more than 100 pieces of study material suitable for first- and second-year students. In a 1945 radio interview Bartók explained 'The Mikrokosmos is a cycle of 153 pieces for Piano written with adidactic purpose. That is to give piano pieces which can be used from the very beginning and then going on. It is graded according to difficulties. And the word Mikrokosmosmay be interpreted as a series of pieces in many different styles representing a small world. Or it may be interpreted as 'world of the little ones the children.'' This volume constitutes the definitive edition of Bartók's tutorials drawing upon all known manuscripts and the printed originals for a corrected version approved by the composer's son and the first student to benefit from these exercises.
