King Arthur was the first of 28 scores Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) composed for radio between 1937 and 1947. It was an ambitious dramatisation of King Arthur’s life and times – part pageant part play part cantata – written by D.G. Bridson. This colourful suite incorporates the Introduction a dramatic Wild Dance some of the music underscoring the scenes for Galahad and The Holy Grail and two vivid battle scenes ending with The Final Battle and Apotheosis. King Arthur (scenes from a radio drama) for brass band should not be confused with a much longer orchestral suite which Paul Hindmarsh devised from the same source in1995. King Arthur (scenes from a radio drama) will be played by the 20 First Section finalists on 16th September 2018 at this year’s National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

Arthur Bliss’s first orchestral compositions his studies for Full Orchestra are believed to have been composed in 1920. The first performance in 1921 was conducted by Arthur Bliss. Par FRACKENPOHL ARTHUR. Divertimento is an original trio by Arthur Frackenpohl that was written at the request of a trio for a senior flute recital at the Crane School of Music. The first movement, Introduction, is in sonata form with two contrasting themes, closing section, short development and recapitulation. In the second movement, Passacaglia, the dorian theme is stated canonically, with variations on the eight bar theme and closing in quietly in the minor. The third movement is a lively Scherzo with a rhythmic first section employing some echo effects before moving into a more subdued and legato trio. The final movement is an energetic Fughetta, which uses the contrapuntal devices ofinversion, augmentation and stretto. Written at the deathbed of Arthur Sullivan’s brother Fred in 1877 and setting words by Adelaide Anne Proctor The Lost Chord was immediately successful and became the biggest sensation of any song in its decade. Of all the drawing room ballads of the Victorian era The Lost Chord has remained alive in the popular imagination. This arrangement for solo Organ is true to the original without overplaying its drama and restores the eponymous 'lost chord’ to the Organ from whence it originally came. Composer Arthur Sullivan is known the world over for his operatic collaborations with W S Gilbert including H M S Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance among many others. ButSullivan was also a composer of a host of other works among them operas Orchestral works ballets and hymns and church pieces.

Le premier mouvement fait converser les deux instruments dans un flot discontinu avant un bref fugato. Le second mouvement expose un large thème lyrique qui avance inexorablement avec poids à la clarinette. The composer Arthur Sullivan and the dramatist W. S. Gilbert joined forces in 1871 and over the next 25 years produced a series of 14 comic operas. Sullivan's tuneful and memorable melodies and Gilbert's amusing words and dialogue - which frequently made fun of British national characteristics and institutions such as the Royal Navy - are as fresh and amusing today as they were over a hundred years ago. Songs vary immensely in style and apart from the clearly comical include others such as 'The flowers that bloom in the spring' that though at first suggesting seriousness on close examination reveal deliberately ludicrous words and ridiculous sentiments - all to thedelight of the audience!
