André Messager (1853-1929) composed Solo De Concours for Clarinet in 1899 as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece. Composed in three sections the cheerful first part contains triplet figures by the Clarinet that can easily be heard over the Orchestra. The second part has a strong French melody that can be heard as an exchange between the Clarinet and the Orchestra. A cadenza followed by trills ends this section and leads to the final part where the Clarinet stands out from the Orchestra with a rich melodic energy. André Messager is a previous student of Gabriel Fauré and CamilleSaint-Saëns who wrote numerous operas operettas and ballets. He was later appointed Commander of the Legion d’Honneur.

Divided into three distinctive parts this piece is rated as difficult and can be played by advanced players and above levels. The first part Allegro (4/4 tempo: 120-126) is really energetic as a start evolved shortly after between slower and faster sections. The second part slower (Largo) starts with the Piano on its own for two measures. This part is strongly influenced by Jazz and features long Clarinet lines supported by a rich Piano accompaniment. Finally the third part is really fast (Prestissimo) and displays a Piano more present slightly taking over the Clarinet. This really melodious piece is perfect to be played in contests or for a recital.

Initially composed in 1907 for Bass Voice and Piano Habanera by Maurice Ravel was transcribed for Bb Clarinet and Piano for this edition.  Based on a Cuban Contradanza it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition the Clarinet is a substitute for the Voice. While composing this piece Maurice Ravel was also working on two pieces with Spanish influence: 'The Spanish Rhapsody' and 'The Spanish Hour'.
