Wind Sketches is a top quality concert work for wind band in three movements inspired by the relationship between man and wind. Trade Winds in the form of a march is reminiscent of a shanty conjuring up seafaring and the tradewinds. Becalmed harmonically and melodically almost static depicts the doldrums. All the more contrasting is Riding the Storm which concerns the love-hate relationship of people to the winds that he needs and at the same times fears.

Composed in the 1700s this traditional Irish ballad was a lament of homesickness for its author and now a tender and beloved melody appearing on countless recordings. Also known as ?The Wind from the South? or ?An Gaoth Aneas ? this setting forsecond year players provides melody for all sections of the band along with subtle and tasteful harmonic variants.

Par BRIDGE FRANK. Frank Bridge was one of the finest English composers of the first half of the 20th century. The Pageant of London is his only work for wind band, comprising of two marches, one scored from Bridge’s best known organ piece and including the chimes ofBig Ben, plus three short renaissance pastiche items, one arranged from Playford (later used by Peter Warlock in Capriol Suite). The music is tuneful, approachable and, in the words of wind band ‘legend’ Timothy Reynish makes a fine alternative toHolst’s two suites, which were composed around the same time. Reynish has introduced this work to concert bands right across the world. It has been performed in USA and the Far East, recorded by the celebrated Kosei Wind Orchestra of Japan and alsoby the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the Chandos edition of Bridge Orchestral Music./ Répertoire / Orchestre D'Harmonie

In Greek mythology Boreas is the God of the North Wind. When thinking of the north wind we particularly think of the bleak wind coming from the freezing cold north but in Homers' work we see a more varied picture. As shown in the following two stories Boreas often does play the role of a storm wind that blows forth heavy dark clouds while whipping up the dark waves of the tempestuous sea to mountainous heights. When the stake of the fallen Patroclos refuses to burn Achilles begs for some wind. When Iris the swift messenger of the Gods asks the winds for assistance they raise themselves up with tremendous roaring and rush to Troy. Upon theirarrival they blow the divine fire of Patroclos' stake far up into the sky. When Troy was destroyed the Greeks returned home. After many wanderings Odysseus however ends up with the beautiful nymph Calypso who keeps him as a prisoner. As ordered by Zeus Calypso frees him and sends him off on a handmade wooden raft. At sea Odysseus is threatened by the aggressive sea god Poseidon who stirs up the winds and thrashes the waves with his trident. The goddess Athena stems the violence of all the winds except for the north wind and thus it is Boreas who sends Odysseus to the land of the hospitable Phaiakes. Jan Bosveld composed Boreas for OLTO a music association in Loenen The Netherlands for which he had served as conductor for many years. Turbulent movement in both tempo and dynamics characterize this composition. The result is a whirling piece that races by in a positive manner. Boreas is in de Griekse mythologie de god van de noordenwind. Bij noordenwind denken wij vooral aan de gure wind uit het ijskoude noorden bij Homerus echter zien we een meer gevariëerd beeld. Natuurlijk speelt Boreas zoals uit de twee onderstaande verhalen blijkt meestal de rol van de stormwind die de zware zwarte wolken voor zich uit blaast en de donkere golven van de onstuimige zee torenhoog opzwiept.

Les trois mouvements de cette pièce s?inspirent des rapports entre les humains et divers types de vents. Le premier Alizés (Trade Winds) prend la forme d?une marche aux accents de chansons de marins le deuxième mouvement Encalminé(Becalmed) est de nature quasi statique sans grand développement mélodique ou harmonique. Le finale Porté par la tempête (Riding the Storm) dépeint les relations humaines par le biais de vents tumultueux dangereux bénéfiques etvivifiants.

Par AULIO MAXIME. « N’écoutez les conseils de personne, sinon du vent qui passe et nous raconte l’histoire du monde. » Claude Debussy / Depuis la nuit des temps, le vent a toujours occupé une place importante dans les civilisations. Dieu vénéré ou égérie des poètes, force motrice ou messager aérien, il emprunte toutes les formes, selon les peuples ou les époques. Les chemins du vent sont ceux qui ne sont pas tracés d’avance ; ils nous racontent mille histoires venues d’ailleurs. Les murmures du vent sont les sentiers diaphanes de l’âme, les couleurs de l’éphémère, la poésie des sons. Avec Claude Debussy, la musique écoutait les voix de la nature et l'imagination retrouvait auprès d'elleses droits primitifs. Chaque instrument semblait fait d’impressions et de suggestions. La partition cessait d'être développement pour devenir enveloppement. C’est cette sensibilité toute française que Debussy contribua à façonner, que nous retrouvons dans Whispering Wind (“Les Murmures du Vent”) de Maxime Aulio. Des climats en suspens, des traits vaporeux, des couleurs lumineuses. Le vent caresse la toile, suggère, évoque seulement, mais avec une éblouissante précision.
