Written in 1803 by Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) this Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major is a classical piece of the Trumpet repertoire. Composed in the spirit of Mozart and initially for the keyed-Trumpet it was re-discovered in 1958 by a Yale student after 150 years of inertia due to the obsolescence of the instrument for which it was made. This edition offers a transposition in E-flat Major (initially in E Major) adapted to the instruments in use today. The other instruments to be involved in this concerto are a Flute two Oboes two Clarinets two Bassoons two Horns Timpani and Strings. Hummel?s Trumpet Concerto begins with an orchestra onlyfirst movement in a sonata theme which is repeated with the inclusion of the soloist. This Allegro Spirito sounds reminiscent of the Haffner Symphony (No. 35 in D Major) by Mozart but distinguished itself by a second theme. The second movement Andante is more melodic with the trumpet which holds long notes. Finally the Rondo offers a blissful and bright end to the Concerto. Former student of Mozart Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) was a brilliant composer pianist conductor and teacher. Evolving at the same period as Beethoveen he became as famous as him and wrote numerous concertos (for Piano Oboe Trumpet Violin and others) operas and some wind music pieces.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Variations Grégoriennes Sur Un Salve Regina 1964. As with his other wind compositions Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Variations Grégoriennes Sur Un Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters providing an exciting alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.

Elgar Howarth’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra has been arranged for Trumpet with Piano accompaniment by Martin Harvey. The new Piano reduction cleverly compensates for the extendedpassages of untuned percussion in the original accompaniment adding yet another dimension to this exciting and volatile work. Elgar Howarth (b. 1935) is one of the foremost Brass musicians in Britain today; highlyregarded as a performer conductor composer and teacher. He was born into the northern Brass Band heritage and studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the RNCM). He played the Trumpet at the Royal Opera House andthe Royal Philharmonic Orchestra while also conducting and composing for several Brass Bands most notably the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. He has since written extensively for solo Brass instruments and continues to teach theTrumpet at the Royal Academy of Music.

A magnificent Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by perhaps the greatest English Composer of the Baroque period. Originally for Trumpet and Strings this is an accurate and faithful Piano transcription by Karl Heinz Fessel. This volume contains two versions of Purcell's glorious Sonata; one in the key of D for C Trumpet and Piano and the other in B flat for B flat Trumpet with Piano.

Incantation - Thrène Et Danse is a piece written for the Paris Conservatoire contest by Alfred Desenclos. Dedicated to two professors E. Foveau and R. Sabarich. this piece for Trumpet and Piano requires advanced skills technique and endurance. Written in three parts Incantation - Threne Et Danse each part starts first with the Piano which is then joined by the Trumpet. In terms of difficulty the keys are changing with up to 4 sharps and 6 flats the rhythms and tempo are quite challenging. The difficulty level is set at 8°.Alfred Desenclos (1912-1961) is a French Composerwho won the Prix de Rome in 1942. He also composed masses such as 'Messe de Requiem' and other pieces for Double Bass Harp Flute Trumpet and French Horn.

Joseph Edouard Barat (1882-1963) is best known for his concertos and compositions for solo wind and orchestra. His sympathy for wind music is thought to have been influenced by his work as a bandmaster with the French Army from which his compositional expertise has derived.    His Andante et Scherzo for Trumpet and Piano begins in a slow common time avoiding clear tonality until it cadences in C major. The second movement is also in C major yet provides contrast by its compound meter and quick pace. Barat's talent is proven when he cleverly combines the two movementsduring the coda.    These musical elements along with many other features create a highly enjoyable performance and is a necessity for any trumpeter's repertoire.

Trumpet parts in both B flat and E flat simplified piano part and a free CD including piano backing tracks and orchestral performance extracts.Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) composed this concerto in 1803 for the keyed trumpet which had been developed by Anton Weidinger (1767-1852). Weidinger gave its first performance on New Year's Day 1804. Originally composed in the key of E it is more commonly played in Eb. The keyed trumpet was the first type of trumpet which could play chromatically but the invention was not a huge success: it suffered from a poor quality of sound. In the early 19th century the invention of the valve rendered the keyed trumpetobsolete.This edition is intended to be more user-friendly than the others currently available: there is a much easier (and dare I say more stylistic) piano accompaniment - any doubling of the solo part has been removed voicing simplified and my premise has been to imagine what it might have been before it was orchestrated rather than trying to cram in every last piece of orchestral detail.Suggested cuts in the piano part have been indicated giving a short introduction to each movement perfect for auditions recitals or exams. However the bar numbers still tally with the longer original versions which are included should they be required. The dynamics and articulation which I have added incorporate the weight of opinion in current editions and recordings offering more guidance than 'scholarly' editions without being overprescriptive.There is an appendix with suggested interpretation of trills and ornaments. Listening to as many different recordings as possible is the best way to assimilate good trills.The accompanying CD provides piano accompaniments and observes the suggested cuts. Rustic by Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) is one of the most well-known and enjoyable pieces for Trumpet and Piano published in 1955. Technically and musically challenging you must be able to master vibrato and control your instrument. The Piano score was initially written for a brass quintet.Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas chamber works and ballets among others.

There is a dearth of short romantic Trumpet pieces of intermediate grade that challenge and inspire players who already feel secure both in their technique and powers of interpretation. The reissue of Legend by R. Orlando Morgan (1865 1956) will therefore be greatly welcomed as music enriched by the passionate harmonies of Tchaikovsky and even of Wagner in an idiom that is graceful and sure. Though largely forgotten the composer was one of many whose artful command of classical styles earned them respect in their lifetimes neglect thereafter on account of changing fashions and now with yet another swing of the pendulum of taste the chance forre-evaluation today.
