Les pièces I ont choisi pour ce livre ont été écrits pour l'instrument de 4 plats et entrent dans trois catégories principales : dansent de la musique, des arrangements de la chanson et des pièces libres. Les pièces libres sont essentiellement des préludes qui explorent la gamme mélodique de l'instrument. Comme le titre l'indique, ces pièces peuvent être joués très librement et ne doivent pas avoir un tempo très strict. Les morceaux de danse ne sont pas vraiment destinées à être dansé à, mais plutôt prendre leur forme et leur rythme des danses de la Cour populaire de l'époque.
